Good value stay for my husband and I for just one night?

      Gatlinburg May 3, 2013 at 1:13 PM

Just hoping if anyone could recommend a nice, good value hotel / motel / B&B with a good view of the mountains. We are staying 1 night in the area on our way to Georgia this month and I want a nice but inexpensive place to rest for the night. We are in our Mid-20s and love the outdoors. Thank you!

      pedicure/manicure for good friend

      Franklin Apr 19, 2013 at 9:03 PM

      hi --

a good friend is coming to visit in mid-may. i would like to treat her to a nice pedicure and manicure, preferably in franklin. i live between cool springs and downtown, but anywhere in franklin would be OK. the main thing is that i want a place that will make her feel really pampered. i'm willing to spend up to about $75 altogether, but the higher the price, the more pampered i want her to feel!

suggestions from people with RECENT experience at a place?

      thanks -- susie margaret

    • Moving in the future

      Chattanooga Mar 1, 2013 at 11:47 AM

Thinking of moving here in a couple of years once the kids are in college. Burned out on the high cost of South Florida and crowds! Once a beautiful place to live. It's a difficult decision because we're not retiring. Late 40's. My husband has connection to possible position at VW. However, our family has property near Knox AND near Ashville, NC. We both have B.S. degree, like outdoor activity. We have been to the Ocoee and other sites. I hate to mention but saw an article; "if you like chiggars, ticks, red necks than Chatt is the place." We did not find that to be true on our trips and loved the downtown area. It seemed very progressive, business oriented. Of course we understand it is a slower pace from Fort. Laud. Also, can someone tell us about UTC which we hear is good vs. UT, Knox? I would like our youngest to attend but hear UT is massive. However, UTC may be a commuter school? Also hear the town Cleveland is nice. We like NC but colder/ice and we feel housing is more expensive in areas such as Chapel Hill, Raleigh. Thanks for all your advice!

Travel between Memphis and New Orleans. Amtrak train versis Greyhound bus.

      Memphis Feb 25, 2013 at 3:28 AM

      Hi all,

Travelling Friday 6th September from Memphis to New Orleans. The Amtrak train departs Memphis at 6:50 am and arrives New Orleans at 3:32 pm. It is an 8 hours 42 minutes journey and costs $58. The Greyhound bus departs Memphis at 9:30 am and arrives New Orleans at 8:30 pm. It is an 11 hours journey and costs $67.50. I'm undecided which one to go for, train leaves a bit early, but the bus gets there a bit late. Has anyone done this journey or can you give me the pros and cons for each? Where does the Greyhound bus leave from in Memphis and where does it arrive at in New Orleans. Similarly the Amtrak train, as I need to choose hotels that are fairly convenient.

      Many thanks, Keith

    • Eating in Memphis - Without pork or fried foods

      Memphis Jan 24, 2013 at 6:07 PM

We'll be in Memphis is mid-April, and we're concerned with whether we can get good local food, given our food preferences. We like to think that we eat all kinds of food - Chinese, Mexican, Brazilian, Korean, French, Italian, Japanese, Greek, etc. - but we have a few things that we don't eat, including pork and fried foods. Unfortunately, the travel guides to Memphis seem to emphasize those foods as local specialties, including barbecue (ribs and pulled pork), soul food (even the vegetables are cooked with pork), and fried chicken. Of course we could find a Chinese restaurant, but what's the point of going to Memphis for that? Can anyone recommend restaurants where we can get good local food, at reasonable prices, that isn't fried or based on pork? If not restaurants, maybe there are local specialties that we can look for on menus. Thanks.

    • Taxis in Nashville during Fanfest

      Nashville Jan 19, 2013 at 8:32 AM

We will be staying in a midtown hotel during Fanfest in June. They have shuttles downtown and back. My concern is if we miss the shuttle back or want to stay downtown for a while. I have read that Nashiville taxis must be reserved i.e. you cannot flag one down. If this is the case, is there a realistic chances of getting one in a reasonable time, given that there are thousands of people in the Broadway area at that time.

    • Grand Ole Opry Question

      Nashville Jan 16, 2013 at 11:17 AM

For those of you who have gone to the Opry at the Grand Ole Opry House, I wonder about seating. I have an opportunity to get seats in Row A which is obviously near the front, separated from a few rows ahead (closer yet to the stage) by what appears to be an aisle. If this is the area where people are encouraged to come up and take photos of the stars I would think that might be a bit of a pain in the neck. Anybody have any experience with this?? Thanks in advance for your input. John

      Hiking with Food

      Gatlinburg Jan 13, 2013 at 12:59 PM

Hello, I've been reading about hiking and being aware of your food with the bears. If we pack a picnic when we go out to Cade's Cove and pack it in an ice chest (we will be in a Jeep with top off), is the ice chest good enough to keep the food sealed or should we use something else? Don't want to attract the bears to us or to our Jeep when we are hiking!! Thanks in advance!!

Driving thru the state of Tennessee, where should I stop

      Tennessee Oct 18, 2012 at 4:58 PM

I will be driving thru Tennessee and have stops in Nashville or Memphis. Which one of these cities should I stop and spend a night and tour the next morning? I want to have BBQ in Memphis and love listening to the blues, but in Nashville they have the Blue Bird Cafe where live music is a given. I have been to both and know they have so much to offer. I just can not decide.....anyone has a favorite and why? cheers Tommy x

    • Opryland Shuttles During FanFest

      Nashville Aug 23, 2012 at 6:28 PM

Does anyone have experience with the shuttles that Gaylord Opryland operate during the June FanFest. I am interested in how early they start running, how often they run and how late they return. Whether we stay there depends on if we can get back and forth during the day as opposed to going in the morning and staying until the concert is over at night. Also would like to be able to taste the nightlife so when the last shuttle returns is important. Thank you in advance.

      Chattanooga Aug 12, 2012 at 11:45 AM

Will be bringing a group of senior citizens to LM in June. Have several questions. Is Point Blank this highest point on the mountain with the best views? Since some of my people are somewhat mobiity limited, is it possible to drive to the top? Is there a place on the top to have a picnic while enjoying the views? Since we won't be able to do the Ruby Falls/Rock City thing, any info on things that a group like this would enjoy would be appreciated. Thanks Norm

    • Athens to Dalton, GA

      Athens Jul 9, 2012 at 11:55 AM

I will be travelling around the USA next year, and am looking to spend as much time as possible in the southern states, hoping to see some of the smaller towns as well as the more well-known ones. I was hoping to spend a couple of nights in Athens, TN, and then move onto Dalton, GA, however I have noticed that the Greyhound buses do not run between these two (other than via Atlanta), and I can't seem to find either on the Amtrak website either. Could anyone advise me on the best way to travel between the two? Thanks.
