I understand that transportation in Iran is really cheap, because of the fuel prices, so one can cover much more miles for a given budget than they can in most other places. I met a German (solo female) traveler in Karachi last week who traveled from Istanbul to Iran by train and she found that perfectly doable. I guess for intercity commuting, public transport will be a better bet than renting a car. I understand that Iran has decent enough network of roads and public transport. Btw, it will be very important to know what country you belong to in order for experienced travelers to respond to your question more precisely.

Rental Cars- You can rent a car, but the problem is driving in congested slow moving traffic in Tehran. If you are planning to drive on inter cities, some mountainous roads used to scary back in 1980s. Better to leave your driving to local professionals. You can take a shared van or taxi far cheaper than you spend on a taxi. Especially the road that goes from Tehran to Chalus(Caspian Sea side) is tricky for a newcomer to Iran.

Hi You can of course rent a car but remember car rentals are both expensive and driving in the traffic of Iran is not really easy. Public transportation are available and really helpful in some cases but Taxis would be the best option for most innercity travels. I guess you should first think of where you wanna go and then decide on your budget and how you prefer to travel. Iran car rentals are quite expensive and sometimes Taxis are overcharging but generaly Iran is a cheap country. I hope the info can help. You can find more about Iran on my homepage. Regards, Mojtaba

Taxis are relatively inexpensive in Tehran. Be forewarned, traffic is dense in central Tehran.
