Taormina or Giardini Naxos

by Spunke Online Now Jan 13, 2011 at 4:58 PM

We will be traveling to Italy this May and are having a hard time deciding on statying in Taormina proper or out on the beach either in Giadini Naxos or the like. We will have 5 or so days and wanted to amke sure that we spend some time in Taormina but didn't want to be in an area that was difficult to get a round in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Both areas nice. Now, you have to make a decision if you want to be up the mountain or down by the beach. ;-)

I thought it was that simple but is getting to Taormina very difficult? I hear that it is very expensive to eat and stay in Taormina?? Any thoughts

Prices are a little higher in Taormina, but not earth shattering. It is fairly easy to go up the hill. Hotels are dearer because you can walk out your door and be with the throngs who are walking mindlessly around with cameras dangling from their necks, they are called tourists. Aren't we all. lol ;-)

Well I also appreciate your advice. I am really lost here as to what to do. I know we wnat to explore the eastern cost and I thought it would be easier from down the hill because of the train and highway being so close but I would hate to miss out on strolling the streets of Taormina late in the day when the tourest leave?????

Ciao, If you stay near the beach area or can park in the area that the Funicular station is located then going up and down from the Corsa Umberto, the main walking street in Taormina is very easy to do and you can go up after the day tourists are gone. Take a look at the following website that may just help you make up your mind. Abbondanza di fortuna. Larry :-)

We stayed a week at Giardini Naxos in mid 2006 after booking an apartment on the net and did not regret taking that option over staying up the hill.....Less expensive & less populated & no hill to climb/descend to go anywhere. Used the local bus to get to G.N. from the airport at Catania & to visit the city during the week. We used a local tour agent at G.N. to book visits to MtEtna & Syracusa and departed north using the train.

Yeah, Taormina is a bit more expensive than the rest of the area. If you'll have a car it can be a bit difficult driving around there. I suggest visiting Castelmola also. A little town on the mountain above Taormina. The views beat out Taormina and it's a picturesque little town. It's about a ten minute drive from T,and you can easily see everything in 2/3 hours.

I recommend staying in Giardini Naxos if you like the beach. You can easily rent a local apartment for a very fair price. You'll be able to relax on the beach, shop at local markets, and eat for less. Go to the beach, eat lunch in Giardini Naxos, rest, shower and then take the bus (costs 1 euro) up to Taormina for dinner. : )
