travel from Tallinn to St Petersburg

by imgettingmarried Online Now Mar 3, 2013 at 9:53 PM

we will be visiting both cities this August. it seems that there is now train service between the cities, but the duration of ride is 6 1/2 hours, almost the same as riding the bus (7 hrs)?? if this is true, which is the better means of travel?

also, if anyone has any special thoughts/ideas about either destination, please share!
thanks, Emily

It is a few years since we travelled from Tallinn to St Petersberg but we were advised to go via Helsinki by train rather than the more direct route.

Hi, The train ride is smoother, and more comfortable. You can also stretch your legs better & move around/walk about more :-)

    I vote for bus! :-)
I had a ride several years ago and found the travel very comfortable. besides the price for the bus was much cheaper.

For nowadays, check http://www.simpleexpress.eu/lang/ , the price for bus is EUR 16 now.

There is only 1 train from Tallinn to StP, it starts at 7.23 am (now it is winter timetable, maybe in summer extra train will be added?), and duration is 6 hours 32 minutes. It has only seats carriages and the cheapest place is EUR 23.85.

Because of competition (Ecolines, Lux Express, Simple Express) buses are cheaper and run more often, but traveling by train is more comfortable, mainly because you can take a walk, have a coffee at the buffet etc., and with train you won't need to get off for the border/customs controls

There were also talks about cutting down travel time and adding mirror train during the season, meaning morning from SPb and evening from Tallinn, but that unlikely to happen (at least until the end of May)

    Hi!

I recomend to do stops in some places on the route - I mean sights in Ida-Virumaa county. You can go by bus or train to town of Johvi. Around Johvi you can visit Kuremae impressive orthodox nunnery complex with many churches, defence walls and towers; Toila sea resort and Valaste waterfall, beautiful town of great Stalinist/soviet architecture - Sillamäe town.
Narva city - the city on Russian border - castle towering over the border river, bastions....
All this places have good restaurants and accomodation.

And next you can go to St. Petersburg from Johvi or Narva by bus or train.
