Should we visit both Takayama and Kanazawa or only one and if so which? we will only have around 17 days for our trip , and otherwise will be in Tokyo, Kyoto and HIroshima.Travelling by train its doable but maybe better to spend more days in one location.. thanks

We spent a couple of days in Takayama and quite enjoyed it. No comments on Kanazawa, as we did not go there. First of all, Takayama is in the mountains, so getting there is by regional trains, if that is the way you are planning to travel. The downtown area is quite compact and you can walk to all of the sites except for the fold village (need to take a bus or taxi). Things to see: 1. Hida folk village - they've brought farm houses from all over the area, restored them and put them all in a nice setting. An alternative to temples. 2. Downtown - old streets and the governer's castle are all worth visiting, 3. The floats displayed at the museum at the Higashiyama Temple are really beautiful and worth visiting. The area is famous for wood carving
