Anyone has any recommendations where to stay in Sanyi town, Miaoli county, Taiwan? Many books recommend West Lake Resortopia, but it's always full.

I recently purchased a flight ticket to Taipei for 9 nights in June 2013. I am South-East Asian Chinese, female, age 55, travelling alone, on shoestring budget, independent and mindful of the perils of solo travel. I have no idea where to go, and what to do (except the night market). But I know what I want. Apart from Taipel, I want the hills and countryside of Taiwan and embrace its beauty and serenity. I want to linger and learn and understand the people and their culture. Can anybody recommend such places and activities that would best depict the essence of Taiwan? I do not want to join a tour group and rush from one place to another, all over Taiwan. I would be contented with just a couple of worthwhile destinations. I plan to take public transport. Recommendations of budget accommodations in suggested places also very much welcomed. Thanks very much.

Anyone has any recommendations on where to stay in Sun Moon Lake, Nantou, Taiwan? There are many hotels available from the Internet all claiming to have a lake view but I believe some do have and some are exaggerated. Prefer on the west side of the lake so as to be able to see the sunrise over the lake.
The hotels are mainly clustered on the west side and east side of the lake. Is there any difference in these two areas? For example, is one of them less populated, or less touristy, or less shops, or less night life etc.

Hi I'm going to Taipei for the 1st time for 5 days in April 2013 bringing my mum and aunt, hence any hotels recommendation at around XImenting area? and also need advices for my itinerary planning.
Places to visit: Ximenting, Shinlin Night Market, Huaxi Night Market, any other places to visit? Suitable for old folks?
Lastly I will need transfer from Taoyuan Airport to hotel, is it advisable to take taxi as we only have 3 persons? hotel limousine is rather expensive? Any recommendation too?

Our ship stops in Keelung for a day. I am considering the following itinerary: Longshan Temple in Taipei and then the National Palace Museum (NPM) for at least 2 hours. Then a beach town called Danshui or Tansui (modern). There is a seaside temple there that I would like to see. Does this make sense? Taxi or train/MRT? How much for taxi?

Does anyone know of any individual / organisation in Taiwan who can organise fishing trips, either river or preferably, ocean?

I'll be over for 2.5 weeks in April, mostly in Taipei but also for 4-5 days on the East Coast, probably near Taidong.

Hi! Am headed to Taipei over the Chinese New Year and would like to get some advice regarding what'll be open and what to do over that period of time. Esp 11-12th Feb. Will the night markets / little cafes / Shida stalls be open? Or would it be better to take a day trip out to Beitou / Yangminshan on the 11/12th? Though I saw online that some of the stuff at Beitou is closed on Mondays (11th Feb)... Any suggestions welcome! Am looking to visit more art / tea houses / little establishments... as opposed to mega malls and such... not sure if this would be an unsuitable time to go... !

What is the best way from Tainan to Hua Lian? Initially I plan to take Hwy 20 but just checked that it has been closed for years due to the typhoon and wont be opened so soon (I will be traveling in January 2013) Shall I go from the south (all the way down to Kenting) then up to Hualian or from Tainan-Taipei-Hualian (from the north). As I dont plan to visit Kenting, which is the fastest way and more hassle free way from Tainan to Hualian?

Hi all, I am planning to visit Taiwan (Taipei, Taroko Goorge, etc) during Lunar New Year Feb 2013. We are 2 adult, 2 children. But recently I read, Taiwan will have one full week holiday during Lunar New Year 2013. My questions are: 1. Is it a good time to visit Taiwan during Lunar New Year? Will it be very crowded? Or maybe all shops, restaurant, museum, attraction places will be closed whole week? 2. Will the hotel be fully booked during that period? More expensive? 3. How about transportation? Will it be difficult to catch buses / taxis? If we go out from Taipei, will the highway fully jammed with cars? Hmm... really want to go holiday during the Lunar New Year.
