I am trying to find a pension on Moorea and the one I am trying to book is asking me to send a international bank transfer for a deposit to hold the room. I dont think they take credit cards. Is this normal and how can I make sure this transaction is safe. Thank you!
So is it normal for a Pension to do this in Moorea?

I can't comment on Moorea specifically, but is it certainly something I have run into in various locations around the world including Asia and South America. In my experience, I did not have any issues, but I did do some research to see if the places were legit.

I've not run into the issue but I have had locations put a hold on a certain amount on my credit card before I've actually used it. What is the name of the location; I've been to Moorea a few times and may know it.

it's normal for 'petite hôtellerie' in French Polynesia as C/C is not widely used the only advice is.. get more info of them and... do what you feel

Yes, fairly normal in some places. I would like to know which "pension" or hotel you are referring to, - like the above, I just might know it....d:o)

Before you send any money via Bank Transfer, you should ask your Bank to verify that the bank numbers indicate the bank you are sending to is actually in French Polynesia. You might find out the money is going somewhere else and the whole thing is a scam. BTW, if the reason the place you are looking at is the least expensive and almost too good to be true, maybe it is too good to be true. Maybe it would be worth looking at other places. If they ask for Western Union or Moneygram, I would stay away from that.

They asked for a bank transfer or Western Union. The pension is F. A. R. E. M.I.T.I (without the periods)

Thanks for the added information. I know of it but have not stayed there, - however, many VTers have, and it gets a fairly overall good reviews here on VT. Here is the VT page for Fare Miti: Moorea Fare Miti Suggest that you review the pages, and perhaps plug the name into TripAdvisor website (Virtual Tourist's sister site), as well. Here it is: tripadvisor.com/ShowUserRevi...

Just coming back from FP and can confirm that smaller places like family pensions do not accept credit cards, and even in shops in Papeete a minimum purchase is required for the acceptance of credit cards. It is normal that a deposit is required upon reservation. If credit cards are not accepted bank transfer is a normal thing. Fare Miti is a bit off the tourist areas - so lovely in general, and Haapiti is really a nice village, but you need your own vehicle to get around.

I have just checked out the official accommodation guide. There are 11 family pensions on Moorea that do accept credit cards (but sometimes only Visa) - and 16 which do not accept credit cards. So the request for a bank transfer is completely normal.
