by sandeepgarg Online Now Apr 20, 2012 at 7:18 PM

We are a family of 9 (4 adults, 1 senior and 4 children between 8-15 years), from INDIA. We shall be arriving in Sydney on the 22nd May 2012, morning, from Cairns after 2 days of visiting the Outer Great barrier reef and Kuranda, and 2 days in Gold Coast. We shall be staying at the Holiday Inn Darling Harbour, for 3 nights. Earlier we are on a 7 day tour of New Zealand with Waitomo, Rotorua, and south Island (Queenstown-3 nights, Franz Josef, Kaiokura, Milford, etc.). we shall be doing the city tour, Opera house tour , Showboat etc. on the 1st day. WHAT DO WE DO ON THE OTHER 2 DAYS??

Skip the Showboat- its not good value. Take a ferry trip to Manly- lovely beachside sburb with superb beach walks and great restuarants & markets and shops. Beautiful views of coastline and Sydney North Head. Cost effective too- get family pass. The trip is 55mins to Manly- 55 mins back to Circular Quay (which is great area too for seeing the sights) & close to the Rocks area (oldest area in Sydney filled with historical buildings, markets and great shops & restuarants too) Visit the iconic Queen Victoria Building in Sydney CBD, Right next to Town Hall station- its also a Sydney Icon. Walk (and take a picnic maybe?) in the Botanical Gardens- free and will be suitable for the whole family. Or take a trip to Katoomba (by train or bus) and visit the Blue Mountains- fabulous scenery and a lovely day trip. About 1.5 hours by train from Sydney, and buses in Katoomba to get you around to scenic outlooks. The Taronga Zoo is excellent for seeing native Australian species (and many others too) and easy to get to on a ferry. Possible to get a combined family/ferry/zoo pass. Enquire at ticket office at Circular Quay.

Excellent tips, Lynne. I would just add Hyde Park and the Cathedral (just there) and a fish/seafood meal at Doyles at Watsons Bay. Well, as it will be late May - just go with the weather. If it is too rainy for Taronga Zoo (which is well and truly fabulous) you can see Australian wildlife at the Wildlife Centre at Darling Harbour, just beside the Aquarium - and if you have not visited Australia Zoo from the Gold Coast. And travel on the monorail as long as it is still there - and as it stops very close to your hotel and would take you across Darling Harbour to the Wildlife Centre/Aquarium.

You might also like to visit Chinatown - there are some wonderful restaurants in the area - and some great things to see especially if you are coming from Darling Harbour. Try a Yum Cha lunch at one of the many venues in the area. There would be veg and non veg options available in the restaurants. Walk in the Rocks area - there are plenty of galleries in the area.

Ferry to Manly and walk around the National Park on the North Head. Walk over the Harbour Bridge (great photo views of the harbour and the Opera House). Walk round the Opera House and through the Botanic Gardens (see the fruit bats). The Aquarium in Darling Harbour has a great display of duck-billed platypus (if they're awake!) and it's possible to get a combination ticket to visit the Aquarium, Wildlife World and the Tower at expedia.com/pub/agent.dll/qs... If one of you can drive, hire a minivan and drive into the Blue Mountains - see the Three Sisters at Katoomba and visit Wentworth Falls on the way back.
