Destinations Close to Sydney?

by naomieats Online Now Apr 7, 2012 at 2:33 AM

We've been in Sydney for a couple weeks and are loving it. But we are staying longer than expected and the flat we rented is booked. So we have 4 or 5 days free days next week before we leave. Are there any good destinations within 4-5 hours (driving) of Sydney to stay and play?

Hi, welcome to VT. It depends on what you want to do. If it's to relax for a few days you could drive for about an hour and a half to the Central Coast and stay in my home town of Terrigal. Great beaches walks and drives, plenty of cafes and restaurants and some good pubs, surfing, swimming, diving, fishing trips etc etc. We have hotels, motels, holiday homes, for different budgets. There's plenty of info on my pages here on VT, just click on my name to go to my Home Page then follow the links.

Heaps of places up and down the coast from Sydney but its still Easter Hols for many people (assume you mean week starting 10th April) and pre-bookings may be necessary. I like Bowral in the southern highlands or further afield is the Snowy Mountains (no snow yet)

Thank you both. I am adding those to our list of places to research for lodging. It seems there are almost too many options in our radius- everyone we talk to has a different place or town that they love. We have done a lot of beach while here as it has been very warm, but not sure if there's something nearby that we shouldn't miss.

Hi I would suggest going inland to Katoomba area- Blue Mountains are beautiful. You could stay at any of the many great little B&B;s along the way. There are interesting little historical towns in the vicinity. Katoomba is about 2.5 hours drive from Sydney. The amazing Jenolan Caves are also close by, and a must see for any visitor. There is accommodation to suit all budgets at Jenolan Caves. Find out more info by Googling, or look up Jenolan Caves on VT ,

There are so many places that you could go to. Most of the heavy traffic will be over by Mon 10 so that would make getting around a little asier. Down south you have Wollongong, Kiama - even down to Nowra and Batesman's Bay all reachable in a day and plenty of places to stay. Inland you have Bowral - even out to Bathurst and Orange. Up north you have Gosford, Newcastle and Port Stephens. All beautiful places and easily accessible.

Depends what you're into. A trip to Mudgee for some wine tasting is great.

Hey there! NSW is great - there are some fantastic spots around Sydney: South: Batemans Bay, Jervis Bay, Snowy Mountains, Wollongong North: Port Macqurie, Newcastle, Central Coast West: Blue Mountains. Hope this gives you a few ideas Kitty :-)

Thank you all for your help. We originally reserved a place down in Batesman Bay but changed our mind since it got cold and we had already spent a lot of time at Bondi and surrounding. My husband and son did a day trip to Blue Mountains a couple weeks ago, but we are all going to go out together this week. Thanks again for all the recs.

Cool, plenty of things to do up there. If you're feeling fit, the stairs at Govetts Leap, Blackheath, descend to the bottom of the waterfall. There's also a nice walk from the 3 sisters lookout to Leura Cascades(I think that's the name). Leura Village is nice for a walk through.

Hi, If you have your own car, head down to Canberra, around 3.5 hour drive. Visit the Parliament House and the Royal Mint, both free. There is a pass for you to visit Cockington Green (miniature garden), Questacon (science museum) and ASIC (sports centre). All three are good. The whole trip can be made in a day, including coming back. PM me if you need any help :D Neil

I wouldn't advise a daytrip to Canberra. The drive from Sydney to Canberra is a long one. It's roughly 3.5hrs each way, and driver fatigue is a big issue. (Done it a couple of times due to family gatherings and it's a freakin' long day). You'd be best spending a weekend there at least,

The Hunter Valley is only a couple of hours from Sydney and is a great place to visit. It is a wine growing region with over 100 cellar doors so if you like a drop of wine a couple of days wine tasting could be fun. There are also a lot of other activities in the area including ballooning, golf, gorgeous gardens to visit, cheese factories and the list goes on. I have a favourite place to stay when I go there (mirvachotels.com/sebel-kirkt... but there is a wide range of accommodation options ranging from cabins to 5 star hotels.
