Hello, After spending 10 days in Tasmania, I have a 11 hour layover in Sydney overnight, landing at 920pm and leaving at 9am the next day- on a Monday night. If possible I'd like to see the city a little, get some good food, and sleep in a quieter place than the airport, all on a budget. Too much to ask? Any suggestions appreciated.
Hi There Yes its possible, there is an train you can catch from the airport into the city. It runs every 15 minutes. www.cityrail.info for times and i find that its a lot quicker than a taxi There are many hotels and hostels around central station that you could consider. Guess it depends on your budget. From Central station there are many things to do. China town is only a 5 -10 walk and if you continue on from there you will find yourself at darling harbour.

It depends how many hours sleep you would like. If flying overseas the next morning you will need to be at the airport 3 hrs prior to departure. As the pp said a train to central and base yourself there is the best idea. China town is the best place to eat and Darling harbour is probably the best place to have a bit of a look at the sights. There are several hostels near central which would provide budget accommodation.

it's expensive to catch the train into the city - over ten bucks - but cheaper than a cab of course yha.com.au/hostels/nsw/sydne... this is a well run hostel near central station - but i did notice a dorm bed is40! - gee prices have soared lately i checked how they say to get there from the airport and they mention a shuttle bus - and i know there are shuttle buses that drop you off at hotels, hostels around town - but i suspect they cost as much as a train and unless yours is the first hostel for drop off it couldn't be quicker there would be cheaper dorm beds in sydney - but this place is handy and has a good rep

airwise.com/airports/south_p... there does apear to be baggage storage at all terminals - if you wanted to dump your bags and go into town on the train for a bit then head on out again to spend the night just check if and when the terminals close eh

Remembering, if you wanted to dump your bags, that you will be arriving at the domestic terminal and departing from the international terminal. But good advice as usual from Craic :)

My wife and I are coming to Australia (Sydney is the main destination for us) and we are also interested in how to get to downtown the easiet from the airport. Take the train? Also, any ideas on where to stay would also be helpful. We would like to spend no more than200 a night and get a quality hotel in a good location. We would like to be either downtown, Darling Harbour, Manly area or Bondi Beach area. POssible?

if i want a reasonable hotel in sydney i always look at wotif.com you can book a month ahead and you should be able to get a good price - unless you are wanting to stay in december over christmas and new year - depending on where the hotel is (they may have an airport shuttle anyway) you may find it is almost as cheap and certainly a lot easier to get a cab from the airport - than to catch the very expensive train to central station there is also i think a shuttle bus that takes people around to their hotels - but i am not sure how much that costs because i have never used it

Hotel shuttle is cheaper than a taxi if 2 or less people travelling BUT it can take forever as it has a set route. If you are one of the least hotels, could be a couple of hours. I did it the very first time I travelled to Sydney. I was in Darlinghurst so it took nearly 2 hours - but it was a great way of seeing the city :)
