From those who have gone before- Please tell me places you hiked or visited in Switzerland that are must see's. thanks.
Lauterbrunnen - You can check out some pictures and tips with this link. "Can I Retire Here?" - Lauterbrunnen by riorich55 Enjoyed hiking in the valley, in the town of Murren above and a little bit outside of Murren. My wife and I also enjoyed walking through the cities of Berne and Luzern. If you are adventurous do some paragliding. We did and our kids were astounded we were that adventurous.

There are so many cog railways, cable cars etc, that wherever you go every few days at the least there will be some interesting rides, and always they are different in the way they get you there. Although quite expensive well worth it, only time we didn't go was when there was poor weather you are just making a donation as nothing can be seen.

RioRich, Would you suggest Lauterbrunnen as a good place to stay for say 5 or 6 days venturing out from there in all directions via train since we will not have a car? We were thinking of a vacation rental rather than hotel. We could stay in Interlaken too but thought a smaller town would be nice providing we can get by without a car. How about places like Pontresina, Lugano and Appenzell?

To help your pondering and planning, you can explore Swiss train times, details and fares in English on the official site here: http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html And see a map of the Swiss rail network here: bueker.net/trainspotting/map...

Lugano was a very enjoyable stay. But different than other parts of Switzerland in my opinion, great change of scenery.

We stayed at a hotel, but check out VT member Kathymof pages for other places. Lauterbrunnen is about a 20 minute train ride to Interlaken.

Hi! I have put this link in for my Switzerland page for you to copy and paste. "MOUNTAINOUS SWITZERLAND" - Switzerland by balhannah It will take you for a tour around the places we went to in Switzerland. We found Thun quite a good place to stay and venture out, as was Montreux. Everywhere is nice in Switzerland, and everywhere for us was very expensive.

Hello again: it would be helpful (and polite) to have some more information about you. Why don't you give us some information on the VT member homepage? It helps us to help you (paragliding is not necessarily ideal for a 80-year old pensioner from the Austrian mounains, nor for a pennyless srudent...).

Will do. I can understand now the need for some background info. This is my first time using a travel forum or any forum for that matter but it has been so helpful. You and others are so kind to answer my many questions.

"paragliding is not necessarily ideal for a 80-year old pensioner from the Austrian mounains, nor for a pennyless srudent...)." You have now posted a bit about yourself. Empty Nesters with 2 grown children. We couldn't get to Europe until our 4 children were finished with college. They never thought mom and dad would paraglide in the Alps. We did and loved it!
