We are finishing up a trip in Switzerland and since my girlfriend is a bit Heidi fan we are stopping in Maienfeld for a couple days. Since it is well more than enough time to see the town and area I'd like to find out other things to do. Anyone know of sites to see or visit? We'd love to check out a tour of any cheese-making or similar cultural options. Or simply a nice village to visit or favorite walking paths. Thanks, Drew
Maienfeld isn't far from Appenzell. It can be a little touristy, but very quaint. There are probably more things to do there, than in Maienfeld.

Thanks Dawg! We don't mind travelling a bit. Quaint and/or touristy is right up the gf's alley. I'd get into it too. We have a rail pass so we can do that or maybe rent a car.

Drew, For more information on Appenzell and the greater Appenzell region go to www.appenzell.ch In Appenzell town, there is free folk music every Thursday in City Hall, and every Wednesday at Hotel Hof Weissbad. There is a folklore museum, and a modern art museum. There are alot of hiking/walking possibilities also. Appenzell to Wausserauen is a 2 hour walk along the creek, through meadows and forests. The Barefoot Walk is a 90 minute path over meadows, through creeks, and on stretches of asphalt road. The town of Stein has the Appenzell Showcase Cheese Dairy (www.showcheese.ch). Here you can take a little tour, and sample some of the cheese. Without a car, the only way to get to Stein is by PubliCar (Appenzell's shuttle service). You can inquire at the TI. When in Appenzell you have to go to the local cheese shop and try some cheeses. They're all locally made, and delicious. The goat cheese was my favorite. You also have to try Appenzeller. It's like a tonic, made with herbs. I have to admit it's an acquired taste, but it's great for a hangover! :) Hope I helped. Todd

I would head to the Engadine valley. By train a short ride via Klosters and the Vereina tunnel. See www.sbb.ch for schedules. For a quaint town go to Guarda, walk to Ardez (another quaint town). Very different architecture from the typical wooden chalets elsewhere in Switzerland. Or go higher up to the Upper Engadine around Pontresina and St. Moritz. Maybe even take the train beyond Pontresina to Bernina pass and Alp Grüm - gorgeous views of glaciers, lakes etc. Maybe get off at Bernina - Diavolezza and take the cable car up to Diavolezza for views of the Bernina massif - spectacular. See my pages here on VT (St. Moritz and Scuol).
