Hello! I will be in Zurich around July 13-18 and will have 5 or 6 nights there. But my plan is not to be in Zurich all the time! I want to visit Appenzel and perhaps St-Gallen for 1 day I want to visit Stein am Rhein and Schaffausen for 1 day I am wondering if I could find a room in a hotel not too far from Zurich that would allow me to easily travel by train (I have a Swiss pass) and visit as many places around as I want. Please give me advice on where I should book a room for 5 or 6 nights - To be based in Zurich center would be too expensive because I do not intend to spend more than 2 1/2 days visiting Zurich. thanks
You best tool here is to use google maps. Google maps for Switzerland has all public transport stops, and if you mouse over a station symbol you will get information on how often trains stop there. Use that in combination with an internet booking site to find hotels near convenient public transport.

Baden is a nice litte town, 15 minutes by train from Zürich.
