Suisse in 7 days. Am I taking the right route?

by chaimchau Online Now May 24, 2012 at 7:33 AM

Me and my husband are taking our first trip here and have come up with the itinerary. But was wondering if I have got things right and not planning the impossible. I have put a lot of effort into it so any else willing to copy the itinerary can go ahead and copy if you like it. All advices are welcome... Day 1: Zermatt: Taking the walking trek to Zmutt Day 2: Zermatt: Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Gornergrat summit Day 3: Interlaken: (Half day- considering train travel and check in) Schynige Platte, Schilthorn and Trummelbach Falls Day 4: Interlaken: Jungfraujoch Day 5: Lucerne: (Half day- considering train travel and check in)Mt Titlus, Gletschergarten, Löwendenkmal (Lion Monument) Day 6: Lucerne: Mount Rigi, Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), Lake Lucerne Day 7: Geneva: Nations Unies (ONU), Le Jet d'Eau, Reformation Wall Am I aiming to cover too many places in a day considering the inter-city train travel and checking into hotels??

I'll comment on the section I know based upon a trip to the Interlaken/Lauterbrunnen area for 3 days and Lucerne for one day back in October, 2008. Days 3 and 4 - Travel to Interlaken and time in area. Have you considered staying in Lauterbrunnen? Since you are going up one side on the mountains one day and up the other side the next day you could save yourself a little time by staying in Lauterbrunnen. It is only a 20 minute train ride between Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen, but still would be a little time savings. We did Schilthorn and Trummelbach Falls easily in one day. We walked to the cable car in Lauterbrunnen from our hotel up the street and took that, a quick 5 minute train ride, walk through Murren, and then 2 more cable cars up to Schilthorn for breakfast. I think that entire trip up took about 1 hour. I would recommend going to the top when it is clear as I don't think the experience would be quite as nice on a cloudy or foggy day. After our breakfast and sightseeing up top we went back down to Murren and walked around a bit. We then went back down to Lauterbrunnen, caught a bus to Trummelbach Falls and then walked through the beautiful valley back to Lauterbrunnen. Days 5 and 6 - we only had less then 1 day in Lucerne. We took an early morning train from Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken and then onto Lucerne arriving around 11:30 a.m. We saw the Lion of Lucerne, walked across the bridge which was right next to our hotel, toured the old town and walked along the old city walls behind the city. Your plan for those and time going above the city sounds doable. You might want to cut out either Mount Titlus or Rigi and spend a time on a lake tour instead which might be a little more relaxing. If you are interested I have links to some short videos with music of our trip up to Schilthorn and the train ride between Lauterbrunnen and Lucerne on mt VT home page.

Thank you riorich55, If I'm not wrong, recollecting from your display picture, I remember reading your reviews. I think one included where you were on a bridge and a lil girl said St. Nick sleeping on a bench at the end of the bridge. If it is you, then your reviews have greatly helped me in planning our trip. I will look at the page you mentioned again. If I have mistaken, then I'm sorry!

Yes, that was my review. Unfortunately the man was homeless, but indeed did have a long white beard and was a bit on the overweight side. Hopefully you will enjoy Switzerland as much as my wife and I did. We got close again a couple of weeks ago spending 3 nights in Stresa, Italy. We could see some of the Swiss Italian Alps but didn't get back to them
