Geneva to Zurich by train

by joanamopa Online Now May 18, 2012 at 2:56 AM

Hi! We are going to stay at Geneva and we would like to go from Geneva to Zurich (making a short stop at Luzern for 2 hours) and come back in the same day. We have seen the web www.sbb.ch but the price is very expensive (178 CHF). Perhaps, we are making somwthing wrong... Please be so kind to inform us if there is any ticket to get a cheaper trip in 1 day. Thank you. Best wishes.

Well, I haven't checked that route, but yes, trains are quite expensive as I "suffered" last December.

Hello, Did you try the so called Sparbilette (Supersaver Tickets) for your required dates? Have a look here: sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and-ti... Also you could try and ask for the ticket price in your homecountry. Sometimes the tickets are much cheaper when bought abroad. I hope this helps, HORSCHECK

Hi Holger's right: I did this trip a couple of years ago when I was transiting through Zuerich and decided to go and have lunch with my husband's cousin in Geneva. It was a very good lunch (for which they paid) and well worth travelling almost the length of the country for, and train trips in Switzerland are always a treat. I booked via that website and though I can't recall the exact amount, it was a great deal cheaper than the regular fare. Usually the fare is lower if you book well in advance. Regards Cathy

Sparbillette are only available for certain time frames and not all year round and they are only valid on the train indicated. If you plan several trips it's worth checking out buying a half fare card for a month plus day cards.

Thank you for all your answers. We have tried on the web Supersaver tickets proposed by Horscheck but the last timetable to come back from Zurich is at 16 p.m, a bit early. Perhaps we should forget Zurich and Luzern. What a pity! I liked Luzern. Could you tell us another swiss cities similar to Luzern but nearer Genève? We are thinking of Genéve-Lausanne-Vevey-Montreux? What do you think about them? Is it worthwhile? Thanks again.
