Swiss Train Schedules

by Icecreamfan Online Now May 16, 2012 at 2:49 PM

Hi. This will be a first time in Switzerland for me. If I travel with a Swiss Pass, I understand that trains, buses, and museums are included. How can one determine the amount of time between certain cities? What about a bus schedule? Also, what is the difference between the panoramic trains and the regular trains? Is one faster than the other? Do they stop at the same stops enroute? Are the panoramic train routes reversible? (i.e. Fluelen to Locarno or Locarno to Fluelen for William Tell Express)? How do I find out what the different train acronyms mean? (IC, ICN, RE, etc.). Is one faster than another? Thanks ever so much!

From my experience many years ago, the Swiss transportation pass does NOT include some 'private' train lines such as up to the Jungfrau and the line to Zermatt (Matterhorn). However, the pass allowed for certain discounts on these lines. Is this still true?

You can download a pdf map of the route network covered by the Swisspass here: swisstravelsystem.com/en/sup... The site says that 'most' of the mountain railways and cableways give 50% discount: swisstravelsystem.com/en/sup... 20% on the Furka mountain steam railway: swisstravelsystem.com/en/sup...

The IC is an InterCity service stopping at major urban hubs. The ICE is an express service. The ICN is a faster tilting train. The IR is a slower service linking towns within a region. Panoramic are trains with better views. The SB train website is great. iPhone App is also available.

To find out how long it takes to get from A to B, for any place in Switzerland use www.sbb.ch. This si the website of the federal railways, but the trip planner has times for buses and even boats too. You can just enter a streed adress, or point of interest in the "to" or "from" boxes. IC,ICN and ICE are all intercity services that only stop at major places. The only difference between those is the type of train used. On some routes you will see both IC and ICE, and they have the same trip times. IR is the next level down. These are fast trainstoo. The main difference between IR trains on the one hand and IC/ICN/ICE trains is that the latter have a restaurant, and the former don't. On many routes IR trains are as fast as IC trains. On other routes they are slower but more interesting. The IR over the Gotthard for example has panorama cars, and thus allows you to enjoy the view more. Al the rest, R, RE, S etc are regional trains, that usually make all stops en route. In switzerland the different trains don't have different prices. A train ticket is allways valid on all trains on a route where it is valid. So you don't really have to worry about categories. Just use the online trip planner and take whatever gets you where you want when you want. All routes are reversible, as there are always the same amount of trains going one way as the other. As trains usually run every hour or every half hour you are very flexible. You don't need to take a "named" route to enjoy the view, the other services give you the same views, and the "names" only exist for marketing purposes in most cases.
