Switzerland in September

by angela6571 Online Now Apr 25, 2012 at 10:30 AM

I will be traveling with my husband and another couple to Switzerland in the first two weeks of September. Our current plan has us in Murren the 4th-7th, Zermatt the 8th and 9th, Lugano the 10th and Luzern the 11th-13th. Our hotel reservations have good cancellation policies so we have the possibilty of going to Luzern and/or Lugano before Zermatt if the weather is bad. Can anyone tell me what kind of weather to expect that time of year? I know it can vary greatly. I'm also worried if it is even a good idea to stay even in Murren if the weather is bad. Maybe Interlaken or somewhere else in the valley floor would be better. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Angela

As you state the weather can indeed vary greatly. However the last couple of years it was normally quite ok. It can be summer still. I think it will not likely rain for the whole of the four days. Of course you will have lots more bad weather opitions if you stay in Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen. On the other hand it is not that far away either. Yo can always take the train/cable car and head out. One good bad weather option is the Trümmelbach falls at the bottom of the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Hi Angela, My wife and I were in Switzerland during the first week of October back in 2008. We stayed 3 nights in Lauterbrunnen and 1 night in Lucerne before our flight the next day back to the states from Zurich. The weather when we were there was from the high 50's and even got into the low 70's one day. Of course going up in the mountains it will get a bit cooler as I'm sure you know. To give you a real good idea of the area go to my home page and click on the 3 links I have of videos I have out on YouTube. The first is a video of our trip up to Schilthorn via a couple of cable cars, mountain train and a walk past bell ringing cows coming down from the higher elevation. The second is a video of our paragliding flight into Interlaken. Seeing that you are up in the balloon on your home page picture you have got to try paragliding if you haven't already. It was amazing. The third is a video of our train ride from Lauterbrunnen up to Lucerne.

Thank you both for the helpful information. I think we will keep our reservation in Murren and have some backup activites if the weather isn't great. Rich, we are debating between hang gliding and paragliding, but we are planning to do one of them. If it is anything like my picture, a balloon ride in Aosta, Italy, I'm sure it is spectacular. Thanks again!

hello Angela Lugano usually gets a better weather than the rest of switzerland (meaning the northern part of the alps)... it's also much different than Luzern or anywhere else in Switzerland. I'm obviously biased (I live in the area) but I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it here. However it's kind of dead in the evening and all day on Sunday - so make sure to avoid being here on the 9th. The advantage of Lugano, if he weather is lousy, is that you can be in Milan in about 1 hour and enjoy great museums and/ shopping. Let mek now if I can hep you in any way. Ciao Rhia

It's just luck but we were in Lauterbrunnen 18, 19, 20 Sept 2009 and we had low cloud the first evening so that we couldn't see the mountains. Woke up the next morning to the most magnificent day. We went up the Schilthorn and the views were to die for. We then went to Junfraujoch the next day and had a mixture of clear and cloud. I had been there in 1984 in September for 2 days and the cloud didn't lift but I saw snow fall. I love Switzerland and would go back again and again no matter the weather conditions. We loved Murren although we didn't stay there and it's only a cable car ride from the valley.
