I'm planning to visit Switzerland and Austria sometime after September 2004 or after October 2004. My interest is the Landscapes, Snow, & Glaciers, is it a good time at the above mentioned periods, and what are the suggested places to visit for so activities? Thanks all
Why not travel on the Bernina Express? It starts from Tirano; Italy and arrives to Saint Moritz. This one is a very beautiful town.

Try the Stubial Alps within easy reach south of Innsbruck. Mountains, snow and glaciers abound. Great hiking too.

My wife and I went on a tour package last November and since we rode by coach between the 2 countries, we passed through a lot of snowcapped mountains which may be to your liking. The views are just stunning together with the autumn color of trees. If you actually want to reach a mountain top, go to Lucerne and ride on the funicular to Mt. Pilatus. Hope this helps.

Well Switz is my fav country for mountain scenery. For glaciers the view of the Aletsch glacier from the top of the Jungfaujoch in the Bernese Oberland is amazing in the good weather. This year we are going to Saas Fee - a village in the Valais region where the glaciers almost creep into the towm - stunnning scenery there. Bernina Express has been mentioned already - and rightly so. Of course Grindewald has its two glaciers there - nice hikes up to these for close-up views. In Austria the Grossglockner trip is a must to see the Franz Josef glacier we have also enjoyed the dams and glaciers above Kaprun near to Zell am See. Plenty to keep you going there for now.

Hi, In addition to previous replies I would also recommend the area between Bernina and Innsbruck - the Swiis Engadin, the Austrian Oberinntal and the neighboring Italian area. On the Swiss side is the National park near Zernez and some great mountain villages and scenery around Scuol (to where you can get by train). The Oberinntal has some great hikes and glaciers to visit, and most corners of this valley itself is not as overrun as several side-valleys like Oetztal and Stubaital are. There is a trainstation in Landeck. The Italian side of the border is a bit different, with large wine and fruit plantations in the valley. The time you choose should be the best time of the year for hiking, unless you come after mid October when snow will return to the higher areas. Good luck, have a nice trip! P.
