4 day stay at Switzerland in June

by SaiS Online Now Mar 11, 2013 at 7:05 AM

We have drawn a brief itinerary of our tour.
Day 1 : London to Basel (By plane). Basel to Engen by train. Stay in Wengen.
Day 2: See Jaunfrau and Interlaken and back to hotel. Stay in Wengen
Day 3: train to Lucerne, see Lucerne and stay in Lucerne
Day 4 : Train to Engelberg, see Mt. Titlis, back to Lucerne.
Day 5: leave Switzerland, train to Zurich

Please advise if this itinerary is feasible. We very much wanted to visit Zermatt as well. Is there any way we could do it? Thanks a lot for your help.

You won['t reach Wengen that easily. There is no direct train connection. Your train from Basel will go to Interlaken. From there you must change tpo Lauterbrunnen, then on to a small train to Wengen:

International train connections to Interlaken Ost (SBB)
Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB) to Lauterbrunnen.
In Lauterbrunnen change on same platform to the Wengernalp Railway (WAB) to Wengen.
The journey from Interlaken Ost to Wengen lasts 45 minutes.

It will take you the better of the day.
Interlaken is not much to see.... Luzern is much nicer.
From the Jungfrau back to Interlaken and then back up to Wengen might be a bit much too, and not cheap. But if you are going up to the Jungfrau, I guess money is not an issue ;-)
Maybe change to Grindelwald instead...... ?

In order not to overpay for train tickets in Switzerland would advise to purchase supersaver tickets offered by Swiss rail, those are discounted and available on many connections in Switzerland, including also journeys with some private rail companies

Thank you very much both of you for you responses. Actually money is an issue and this timetable is more out of ignorance rather than prosperity. Would be very grateful if you give us pointers as to how to plan our 4 day trip if we want to do Jungfrau, Titlis and Lucerne.
We thought the best idea would be to stay 2 days in Wengen and 2 in Lucerne. Let us know if there is a better alternative. Thanking you.
Will definitely look at supersaver tickets.

To calculate your options and make an itinerary, check out the time tables and pricing on the dedicated website here:
    www.jungfrau.ch/en/sommer/tourism

    more specifically here: jungfrau.ch/en/sommer/touris...

We were in Grindelwald in May 2 years ago with some friends from the US and looked up at the Eiger.... the weather wasn't great and we decided that 177 Swiss Francs a person (or 138 for half a day) would not merit. Luckily we travel by car and we decided to do a tour of the Thuner See (lake) instead and visit places like Spiez, Thun and Oberhofen (castle).

Wengen is nice, Grindelwald is a little bigger. If it were me, I'd find a place to stay there or in Interlaken (where you can take a boat tour over one of the two lakes in case the sky is clouding the Jungfrau).

Your trip could look like this:
    1. Fly in to Basel, take train to Interlaken. Possibly on to Grindelwald or Wengen.
    2. Early decision Jungfrau or alternative. Take train up to the mountain or alternative

Late afternoon - take train to Lucerne

    3. Early decision visit (100 Euro per person via isango.com/switzerland-tours... ) or do a boat trip over the lake visiting Treib, Stans and other nice places
    4. Stroll through Luzern, maybe a (short) boat trip if you didn't do that the other day), train back to Basel

Just a thought.... You can also visit the Pilatus mountain as an alternative (not as high, but with clear weather an absolute stunning view over the lake.

    Hope this helps.

    Kind regards,
    Francois
