    • Information about Way Kambas or Krakatau

      Sumatra Apr 27, 2013 at 9:34 PM

I have been living in Bengkulu for over half a year now and it is about time for me to go back to the States, but before I leave my friend wants to take me on a short trip here in Indonesia. I have been really interested in going to Way Kambas park to try and see some of the animals there but recently I have also been interested in seeing Anak Krakatau. If I was in Lampung province for 4 or 5 days would it be possible to see both?
Does anyone know of someone who could help us get from Way Kambas to Krakatau or just help us with planning a trip in that area? I am very open to suggestions.

      Yogyakarta May 8, 2013 at 7:46 AM

      Hi

We are a couple who are going to Yogyakarta to study for a semester, from September to February this year. Do any of you have any recommendations regarding places to live? Price isn't really a big issue, as Indonesia is cheap in comparison to our home country. We were looking at this place tigalima.wordpress.com/room-... (the Room Deluxe), but they were full.

Would be nice if it wasn't too far from UGM :)

      Thanks in advance!

2 mths stay for health, healing, rejuvenation and to feed my artistic soul

      Ubud May 11, 2013 at 3:57 AM

I was recently recommend UBUD as a destination to consider for time out to recover my health, and reignite my spirit, emotionally, physically and artistically. I am single, a photographer / graphic designer and seek a safe place to call home for 2 mths.
On my wish list is the following:

      • A quaint place to stay, picturesque, lush, and quiet ( budget $50 per night)
      • Air con & a good swimming pool that I can exercise in.
      • Easily accessible to markets, cafes, town - as I cant walk distances due to an injured foot. Though I have heard its easy to get around by public transport
      • Would like to also engage in art workshops - and even cooking ones would be great too
      • Affordable daily massages
      • Sound baths or similar if they exist
      • Gentle exercise classes
      • Open to other forms of healing...

Advise given to me was to find a nice place to stay and then go and visit a place called the Yoga Barn as from there I could find many opportunities for health / healing networking and so forth etc.

Does anyone have any tips for art workshops of any kind? A central place like the Yoga Barn maybe and a website perhaps etc.

Are their any forums one can use to network - maybe to find other people in Ubud where one can share interests - ie photography, or just hook up for coffee etc.

I am planning to go Sept / October
I am not a beach or bar person. More inclined to seek peaceful environs....

      Many thanks in anticipation.
P.S. I am in my 40's so I would like some comforts but it doesn't have to be extravagant. Gone are the days of backpacking :)

    • Family Travel - Itinerary & Timing Questions

North Sumatra Province Apr 23, 2013 at 6:57 PM

We are a family of four (two older teens) who are interested in going to Sumatra. We have about 16 days (including travel to/from Australia) and were considering flying in Medan, seeing orangutans in Bukit Lawang and possibly trekking a bit there (son is very fit; us not as much!) or possibly saving trekking to do so with elephants in Tangkahan, which sounds amazing. We also want to fit in Lake Toba and a 5+ day beach holiday at the end. We are wondering for the beach part if we should then go up to Banda Ache and on to Pulau Weh (is there snorkelling there as well as diving and is there anything for the kids to do if they get sick of relaxing?) or fly to Padang at go to cubadak paradisovillage where there seems to be diving and snorkelling. As I write all this, I think it sounds ambitious for two weeks, so would like advice about what the best options are. We've been diving/snorkelling in Bunaken, Komodo/Flores and Barrier Reef so wonder how marine life around Sumatra compares. Also visited orangutans in Kalimantan via river boat. We are hoping that Sumatra will be different to those trips to add to our love of Indonesia and our view of how diverse the country is. Thank you for any advice you can provide!

      July 2013

      Indonesia Apr 21, 2013 at 9:10 AM

I am in the earliest stages of planning 30 days in Indonesia for this coming July 2013. Can anyone offer some tips on building an itinerary?
We are a 50-year-old couple. Very active, love historic sites, cultural experiences, geographic marvels, beautiful beaches.
Do not desire party-hearty atmosphere, a high percentage of city time, or un-needed luxury.
I looked into the possibility of joining an Explore or Intrepid tour for first 14 days and then the last 16 days independent but dates don't work out for that. Neither of us has been to any part of Asia before though both have extensive travel experience.
Can some of the Indonesia experts toss in some suggestions? Of course, I'm reading extensively the Indonesia pages here on VT but would love to hear from you as this strategy has never failed to open up our world beyond our individual abilities.
      Thanks, Lynn and Will

Also, can electronics from Australia work in East java just with a travel adapter, or do we need to buy new electronics and electrical stuff once we get there? Thanks

Here is my plan to Indonesia: Day 1: arrive Jakarta Day 2: City Tour in Jakarta Day 3: domestic flight to Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta city tour Day 4: Borobudur Day 5: Prambanan Day 6: domestic flight to Surabaya (early morning). Join 2-day tour to Bromo Day 7: see sun rise on Bromo, Go back to Surabaya day 8: Surabaya city tour, see the Komodo dragon in the zoo. Day 9: domestic flight to Lombok Island Day 10: Lombok Day 11: go to Bali, city tour in Bali Day 12: domestic flight to Jakarta Day 13: flight to Hong Kong My questions regarding the part in Surabaya: 1. Plan to catch early flight from Yogyakarta to Surabaya so that I can join a local tour to Bromo. Is this feasible? Am I having enough time to find a travel agency? Shall I book the tour in advance elsewhere, ie Yogyakarta? 2. What is the average price for the local tour? 3. From Surabaya is there flight to Lombok? Thanks a lot!

by SonyaSz Online Now Oct 8, 2010 at 11:14 PM

Hi there - we are a family with 4 young children (aged between 4 and 9) and we're planning to visit Bromo and the East Java area at the end of December. We have just less than a week, flying in and out of Surabaya. We were thinking of renting a car and driving ourselves but I'm not sure whether this is a realistic/wise plan - any comments?! Alternatively we will arrange a driver/transport to take us around. Any recommendations of good transport companies or cars/drivers? Ideally we'd take someone from Surabaya where we start and finish. With young children we'd need someone safe and patient....! Also any suggestions as to itinerary? We'd like to climb Mount Bromo of course, and also see as many of the best volcano views in the area as we can. The Ijen crater sounds beautiful. And then Malang sounds like a nice town. Also there are coffee and tea plantations. And Taman Safari sounds good - anyone been there? Lastly - I know it's NE monsoon time so not the ideal time to go - but would it still be possible to climb Bromo? Thanks so much for any advice - much appreciated!

Last week, I posted a question in Yogya forum, saying that I planned to visit Borobudur and Mt Bromo. But now I am considering another option: leave Borobudur to 2011, and visit Bromo + Kawah Ijen this year. Here is the itinerary in my mind: Day 1: Arrive at Surabaya Day 2: Surabaya to Cemoro Lawang Day 3: Mt Bromo in the morning. Leave for Bondowoso after breakfast. Day 4: Join an organized tour to Ijen Day 5: Bondowoso to Malang Day 6: Malang to Surabaya airport Questions: (a) I intend to take public transport throughout the trip, except for the morning tour in Bromo/Tengger Caldera, and the tour to Ijen. Is this possible? (c) How do you think of my itinerary in general? Will I need 7 days instead of 6? Many thanks in advance.

      Arriving in Surabaya from Yogyakarta

by visitcebu Online Now Jul 30, 2009 at 1:54 AM

Hi all, Just wanted to know what you would recommend as the best way to arrive in Surabaya from Yogyakarta, based on time, money and convenience (number of hours). Upon arriving in Surabaya, what would be the best mode of transportation to get to the city center? Is there a good hotel like IBIS which is around 400,000 Rp. per room (for 2 persons) per night in the city center? Would it be near a shopping mall as well? What would you recommend to see in Surabaya? I have read that Malang is worth the trip. Would you recommend staying in Malang for 1 night then going back to Surabaya since we need to fly to Denpasar after Surabaya. Thank you for the help!

Is there any hotel close to the airport. I have an overnight connection and I do not really wish to travel all the way to Surabaya itself if possible.

Can anyone please advise an ideal itinerary for an 11 day visit to java and bali? i got 11 full days. flying in to jakarta, my option is to connect to bali by plane, or to surabaya to visit mt. bromo. Then fly on to bali from surabaya? 3-4 days in bali, then fly to yogya to visit borobudur, from there perhaps a night train to jakarta? Can anyone please advise the better thing to do to manage time? Many thanks.
