Transport, weather and sights in Stavanger

by maxpax64 Online Now May 5, 2007 at 11:55 PM

I will possibly be doing a study exchange in Stavanger at UIS and would like to know the easiest and cheapest way to get around the city ? I am looking at Aug - Dec and also wonder what the climate is like in that period? Are then any trips or sights that are a must while in Stavanger

Climate between August and December? Well, that covers both summer, autumn and winter, so ... varied? :op See www.met.no for weather statistics. August is still summer, so it might still be nice and warm and sunny (or rainy and chilly - the weather in Norway can be pretty unpredictable...) Autumn tends to be quite rainy on the western coast, it might snow before December but the snow rarely settles for very long. For late autumn and winter, expect temperatures generally between -5C and 10C. Must see: Prekestolen / the Pulpit rock en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preike... Also take a look at the Stavanger pages here on VT.

Central Stavanger isn't that huge and walking is the most cost effective option ;-) But seriously, the bus service here is very good. They run on time, are frequent and reasonably priced - certainly cheaper than taxi! As a student, you will probably be eligible for a special discount on travel. The main bus company (Kolumbus) issue various types of bus pass depending on the type of travel you intend to make and your circumstances. You buy a card (approx 50 NOK), charge it up and swipe it past a machine on the bus. Go to Kolumbus' site for details here: kolumbus.no/index.php?c=9&ka... Weather: well August and early september are still likely to be warm (even if it does rain!) but towards the end of September and getting into October, it will start to cool down quite a lot and November/December could feel quite raw (although last year, these two months weren't that cold).

Nice sights close to UIS: Botanical Garden (free entrance), Iron Age Farm, Telecom tower, Hafrsfjord. Hiking is good in the area, too, even though it is within the borders of the city :-)
