How far is it to drive from Hobart or Port Arthur to Cradle Mountain or Lake St. Clair? How long does it take? Is it passable in August? Is there anything of interest on the way? Can a trip to Cradle Mountain and Lake St. Clair be worthwhile without strenuous walking? We are a middle-aged couple. How much is accessible by car?
I am not sure how far it is, probably about half a days drive. There are plenty of small historic towns along the way. Cradle Mountain and Lake St Claire are both very beautiful and many people go there just for the veiws. There are many short walks available 1/2 hour - 2-3 hours or just stop and have a coffee at the visitors center. It may be quite chilly that time of year so rug up, the weather can suddenly change at any time so be prepared. The bonus of snow of the mountains will only make the view more spectacular. As far as I can recal all the roads are sealed and can be driven on by normal cars, so unless there is very heavy snow or wild weather you should be fine. Enjoy your trip.
