I'm travelling to Adelaide and South Australia in two weeks. We're landing at noon on Thursday and have a 10:30 ferry to Kangaroo Island booked for the next day. At first I planned to go to Barossa but now I think we don't have enough time for that. Between Adelaide Hills and McLaren, what would be your choice? Adelaide Hills is closer to the airport so we would have more time to visit. McLaren would get us further south for a shorter drive the next day... any tips/suggestions? Thanks in advance! :)
Hello:) How's all the planning going? Last time I was in Adelaide I stayed with VT member Adelaidean and we went for a great drive around the Adelaide hills. Very pretty little towns and wineries along the way. I will leave a comment on Deb's page and tell her to get in here and help you:) Have fun.... Anne

I think that your 2 choices are really Barossa or Mclaren Vale down south.. Adelaide hills does have some lovely little wineries, but to come here and not visit the Barossa would be very sad...The barossa is only about 90 minutes from adelaide..so if you hired a car you could get there on thursday..If not I would definitely opt for Mclaren...give the adelaide hills a miss if you are only doing it for wineries...

Hi , If you do not have time for Barossa I recommend you go to Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, very pretty, set up by Germans when the arrived, the German Arms hotel is great, just like the rest of town. I believe public buses travel from city, or you can take a tour or drive. Good Luck, Mikebb

This is a very pretty little town...but its not exactly a wine region...except in the bottle shops...Its definitely worth a visit if you have a few hours though.

Having grown up in Tanunda I am a bit biased, but the Barossa Valley is a major wine producing area with dozens of wineries both big and small. Seppelts, Orlando, Saltram, Henschkes etc. etc. are all in the Barossa and most of them have wine tasting or visitor facilities. The country side is a delight, reminiscent of parts of Tuscany and really it is no more than an hour from Adelaide.

I love the Barossa as well...but do you think that they have enough time...I think that they would be cutting it fine...

Arriving at noon you would be in the Barossa for a late lunch, perhaps at Lyndoch (nice places there) on to Tanunda, Nuriootpa, Angaston and back via Birdwood. Five or six hours would do it easily.

Time is exactly the problem. I know Barossa is not far from Adelaide - but it's in the completely wrong direction. Right now we are leaning towards McLaren Vale. There are some great wineries there!
