    • Reasonably priced accommodation in Sydney

      Sydney Yesterday

I am in the UK and hoping to visit Sydney in March 2014 for a month. What is the best way to book reasonably priced accommodation for this amount of time? I would be wanting at most a small apartment or at very least a bedroom with ensuite for just one person. I have seen sites with rooms in houses but with shared bathrooms which does not appeal to me.
This may sound daft but do I need a visa if I am just visiting for a month on holiday?
      Thanks for any advice

    • Lodging in Sydney -- next March - 10 or 11 nights

      Sydney Apr 4, 2013 at 3:46 PM

Hello, I am looking into lodging options for our trip to Australia next year. We are flying into Brisbane from LA -- figure to spend 5 nights there, then fly down to Melbourne, 7 nights there, then rent a car and drive the great coast road - three nights out there before flying to Sydney.

The plan is for 10 or 11 nights in Sydney, we are looking at self-catered apartments. We don't plan on a car for Sydney, and do plan on a number of day trips as it is clear there is much to see and do.

We are in our 60's and fairly experienced travelers (US, Canada, Europe, Israel).

Do folks here have some suggestions? While we are not *super* budget conscious, we are looking for reasonable cost options for that length of stay.

      Best option to Blue Mountain?

      Sydney Mar 31, 2013 at 5:29 AM

Have been thinking to go to Blue Montain (day trip), and seen some day tour which look like including other stuff than Blue Montain(more than I need). And I have been reading that I can go there by train to Katoomba then continue with bus and experiencing scenic railway.
Any experiences if I better join on tour or go on our own? Is it complicated to go on our own (prefer this)?
Any info on ticket will be appreciated
      Many thanks in advance

      Airport

      Newcastle Mar 7, 2013 at 3:55 AM

I was thinking of flying from Newcastle back to Melbourne in April. But now I find Newcastle Airport is in Port Stephens. I can't find out the best way to get to the airport from the centre of the city. Is there a designated shuttle bus? There are buses on the airport website but there seem very infrequent. They do say it takes 25 minutes to drive there.
Has anyone got any helpful info before I throw my hat over the windmill and book a flight.?

      Sydney Mar 3, 2013 at 5:43 PM

Hey there, i'm a first time traveler to Oz. coming from USA. I'm flying on qantas and I'm curious as to the margin on the carry on weight. It says 1 item at 15lb max. If my bag is 18lbs am I gonna have to pay more? Does it really depend on the security personnel? If I'm not checking anything and just have one bag that's a tad heavy, maybe they will have mercy, haha? Thanks in advance

      Ferries, buses etc

      Sydney Mar 3, 2013 at 7:14 AM

Hi - It's been years since I used public transport in Sydney and I was trying to bone up on it as I will be up there at the end of March. But I can't find a succinct explanation on line of how it integrates.
For instance if you travel by ferry do you have to buy a separate ticket?
Also as I am a senior I would like to take advantage of the cheaper fares.
Can someone help me get on top of how it works?
      Thanks.

      SYD airport transfer

      Sydney Jan 17, 2013 at 2:37 AM

Flying Emirates from AKL to SYD to connect with a Hawaiian Airlines flight to HNL. Have about 85 minutes to connect, and I do not have checked bags, only carry-aboard luggage. Both are in T1. Does anyone know if is enough time? What gates does Emirates typically arrive at in T1? And, what gate does Hawaiian typically depart from in T1? Because they were separately booked, I also need to check in for HA at the SYD airport Do I check in at the Hawaiian gate, or is there a transfers desk that can facilitate my HA check in? Any help here would ease this worried traveler's mind. thanks!

      Sydney Dec 16, 2012 at 5:56 PM

Hello, We are 5 adults who would like advice about a few locations we are considering for the fireworks this year. By the way we will be staying at the Lane Cove Tourist Park and need public transport there and back. :- Macquarie Point and Opera House are the obvious but we know it will be an extremely long day/night to secure a good spot. Also mindful that the weather could be extreme: hot, wet etc. :-Woolwich, Clarkes Point area. What time should we arrive and does anyone know if this is a large area for people to fit into or again do we need to be there very early as well?? :-Balls Head Reserve: is this too far away for a good view? We've considered Milson's Point and Kurraba Point Reserve but wouldn't these also require getting there very early and is there a charge for these places?? We would appreciate all ideas and suggestions. Thanking you in advance, Anna
