From Calicut or Cochin to Madurai, and back and where New Year with fireworks

by Leo2006 Online Now Sep 30, 2011 at 2:10 AM

Hallo, Thank you again for your advices. As I wrote I go to Calicult with a child, and want to show him Madurai. But it looks the connection from Madurai to Calicut is not easy (either flight via Mumbai, 20 hours, or train, also 10 hours). So, I have some questions: 1) Is the Sleeper Train comfortable enough (according to European standards, AC, bed, etc) to go with a child on Sleeper Train? Or should I better let Madurai out of program? Or are the direct flights? 2) Are there National Parks (like those in Chitwan, Nepal) close to Calicut or Cochin, so that we can ride an elefant through junges, see animals? 3) New Year: my son insists on New Year with fireworks, or wants to be back in Europe at 31.12. What is the best place to buy and fire fireworks over New Year? Or should we better indeed go back to Europe to do it in full power? Leo

    1. 2 A/C (2nd. Class Air Conditioned) Classes are good enough. There is 1 A/C (First Class Air-Conditioned Sleeper) but these are frightfully expensive compared to 2nd. A/C. If you request for a coupe (2 berths; upper and lower berths), you will have utmost privacy as a coupe is separate compared to a four-or six-sleeper compartment. 2. Don't exclude Madurai. It is worth the effort. You won't see such 'gopurums' anywhere else and in such profusion. 3. New Year fireworks in South India will not match the fervour of Europe and the rest of the Christian world as it is not in the ethos of the people down South. Even if some fireworks are planned, they will be a damp squib compared to the Western world.

Thank you very much! About New Yea - what about Cochin festival? Can I simply buy fireworks there, and organize my own fest? (I was last year in Tunis, and it was not so good there with fireworks). And - what about Bandipur National Park ? Is it worth a day trip? Or can we organize elephant rides in jungles somewhere in or near Calicut?
