From Delhi, get an early morning train to Chandrigar, then a direct bus to Shimla, an old British Hill Station, where i suggest you spend two nights to see the attractions. Unfortunately the trip by bus from Shimla is 10 hours but passes by some beautiful scenery. You may want to break your journey in Bhuntar and spend a couple of days in the Parvati valley at such places as Jari, or a hike to the mountain village of Malana where you will find many Maryjane growing in this village where it is forbidden to touch the locals or buildings. Head further up the valley to Kasol(picturesque village. Manikaran is worth a visit, famous for hot springs and a pilgrimage centre for Hundus and Sikhs. From Bhuntar continue up the Kullu valley , perhaps pass to the right hand side and visit the castle at Naggar before reaching Manali. Many sporting activities are available at Manali, visit Vashist and trek further up the valley. From Manali you have another 10 hour bus trip to Dharamsala, where you should head directly to Mcloed Ganj where the Dalai Lama has his residence. Many attractions here and hiking too, before the 12 hour bus trip back to Delhi. You never mentioned the duration of your trip! Hope this helps.

Driving is tough in India and sometimes very slow, overtaking on blind corners, the bigger vehicle rules the road. you might be able to get there in 9 hours but it will be a nerve racking experience.
