One thing you'll need to make sure to do while in the Detroit area is to go to the Henry Ford museum and Greenfield Village. Housed there is an amazing collection of historical memorabilia including the car that JFK was riding in while he was assassinated. Also there is an IMAX. All of this is in Dearborn. St. Clair Shores is right on the water - you might want to check out some nearby harbors to see if you can rent some sort of boat. Make sure to eat at Fishbones Rhythm Kitchen Cafe - fantastic Creole food! It's on Jefferson Ave. Try to head down to Greektown in downtown Detroit for one meal. Park in the garage and have someone in your party take the ticket into the casino to get it stamped (then it will be free). Make sure to order the flaming cheese. Also in Detroit are the Detroit Institute of Arts which has some wonderful pieces and nearby is the Detroit Science Center which was remodeled 5 or 6 years ago and has some great hands-on exhibits for kids if you will have some with you. There is an IMAX at the Detroit Science Center, too. Have a rainy day? Go north on I-75 to shop at Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills. It is a collection of outlets and it is huge. It is well-worth the trip! Sorry, I don't know the hotels in St. Clair Shores - I would recommend going with some sort of chain - Holiday Inn Selects are pretty nice up here.
