Hi, Im visiting Sri Lanka in September anf have most of the trip sorted. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best way to get from Yala to Unawatuna? Would it be to hier a driver? I dont think there are any trains but i could be wrong. Thanks Fee
you're correct, there are no trains for that route......I have taken either the local bus and maybe part way tuk-tuk, if you stop en route; otherwise a car/driver, but then you would hire that for round trip?

You are correct, there are no trains, but if you can get to Tissamaharama there are long distance buses to Galle (5-6HRS) then 5 more kms to Unawatana by local transport. The quickest and easiest way would be to hire a car/driver.

The long distance buses Tissa-Galle do pass U'tuna. Simply ask to get off there, no need to first go Galle and then travel 5 km on same road back... All the best, & [Sandya]

Thanks for you help, do you think I would need to book a driver before I go? Also do you have any idea how long it would take with a driver? Many thanks Fee

No need to prebook a driver if it's one-way. About 150 km means 4 hours and Rs 11,000 cost. All the best, & [Sandya]

Thank you for your help. Another question- When traveling from nuwara eliya to yala sri lanka would it be best to hire a driver as between to two also? Thanks

Yes if you don't want bus. There are a few direct buses Eliya-Tissa-Hambantota, but comfort and luggage space of those is far below that of trains. All the best, & [Sandya]

Depends on your budget and likes. Car-driver about 5 hours and bus 6 hours. All the best, & [Sandya] / owners of 2nd home in Lanka yes so that forces us to travel regularly ;-)
