What's the train system like in Sri Lanka? Are there first class wagons and sleeper wagons? Would you recommend someone to travel around Sri Lanka on a train? First hand experience would be appreciated very much.
Depends on where you are going. There is a 1st class observation car on some of the trains from Colombo to Kandy and the upcountry trains. ExpoRail (http://www.exporail.lk/) has a 1st class car attached to some Kandy, Badulla, Vavuniya and Trincomalee trains. Rajadhani Express (http://www.blueline.lk/) has a 1st class car attached to some Kandy, Badulla, and Batticaloa trains. I have never been on a night train, but hear that sleepers a way below the standards in e.g. India.

I haven't used a sleeper in Lanka in 30 yrs........and many of the trains are quite old and tracks not much better; but many of the routes are beautiful, so if you are a lover of trains and a seasoned traveller, they are still a good way to travel and MUCH cheaper than having to hire a road vehicle, and to my opinion, better than bus travel.

Those links that you have attached are very helpful. Unfortunately the seats are fully booked in the Exporail while Rajadhani does not allow online booking. What is the most beautiful train ride in Sri Lanka?

Hi there, a] Rajadhani also has online booking, at mreservation.mobitel.lk/Raja... but indeed it's a bit more primitive than Exporails b] That's always subjective. Our number #1 is Nanu Oya (Eliya) to Badulla, passing Haputale and Ella. All the best, & [Sandya]
