5-6 weeks in December/Jan with wife and two daughters (11 and 14). Daughters have done Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam several times with us - easy to feed them the occasional Western food in Sri Lanka ??? Planning Colombo - Kandy - head south to beaches and follow coast back to Colombo. Suggestions on Colombo accommodation areas when we arrive to get our bearings and settle in. Don't mind splurging a bit on arrival eg50-$75 / night. Is this a reasonable amount to pay ? Kandy accommodation ? Best beach areas in the south ? Any "must see" places ? Thanks. Phil
Tourist visa (with an ETA) is only valid for 30 days. You will either need apply for a visa at the nearest Sri Lankan High Commission/Embassy or extend at the Immigration Department in Colombo. You will find western type food in most places in Sri Lanka. You will hardly find decent accommodation at USD 50-75 in Colombo City. You will have to go to the suburbs, e.g. Mount Lavinia. Why not stay in Negombo - 20 mins from the airport. Plenty of decent budget accommodation and plenty of restaurants outside hotels. You totally left out the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla and the ancient cities - Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa). All beaches on the south coast from Tangalle to Unawatuna are nice and also on the west coast up to around Bentota/Beruwala. The western end of the south coast and the west coast will have the driest weather from around Christmas.

yes, I too was going to say that with a month+, you definitely should spend a few days north of Kandy to the , CULTURAL TRIANGLE; i.e., SIGIRIYA is wonderful to climb, but even if you don't, just to see is lovely, thence to Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, Dambulla. But if you didn't want to spend too much time, eliminate some of it; those northern areas are so beautiful and to me, the REAL Lanka. also, see my KANDY page for a great B&B recommendation. SPICA HOLIDAY HOME, which has a good website you can communicte with them.

Thanks for the helpful info. Have you come across any "must stay" accommodation in your travels ?

GALLE FACE HOTEL in Colombo; oldest operating hotel in Asia; still a fair bit of the old Colonial atmosphere; right on the ocean, selection of restaurants and breakfas on the verandah, old style or renovated rooms, spa, etc.; see my COLBOMBO page also, the B&B in Kandy is quite nice, run by lovely local people. the HERITANCE HOTELS http://www.heritancehotels.com/ one is the KANDALAMA, which is in middle of the jungle area toward Cultural Triangle, eco designed; lots of utubes on the internet showing it- the other one is the AHUNGALLA, which is south of Colombo and on the beach
