Bentota and Colombo

I arrive in a few weeks in the evening in colombo and leave early morning 9 days later. I was going to stay in Colombo the night of arrival and departure as was going to stay in Bentota region. However also wanted to go to Pinnawela Elephant Orphange, how long does this take from colombo and what time is best to visit for feeding etc.. Wanted to know travel times and the suggested way to go.. Should i stay in colombo and then go to elephants then down to bentota in a day is this sensible Thanks Joe
