    Another incorrect reply from jhnrbrts.

The few shops/hotels that will accept foreign currencies will do that at a rate that is very bad for you.

Changing in a bank (there are 6 bank counters open 24/7/365 at arrival at the airport) or moneychangers (often jewellery shops) it does not matter whether you change EUR or USD. Today's rate over the counter is LKR 111 for USSD 1, LKR 147 for EUR 1.

US dol is the most famous one.Get to know how much Bank is offering .Go to a private money exchanger. If he says less say bank is giving this much and bargain. you will get a good price than in Bank.In bank you have to answer all the stupid ques and wait..In private shops its easy just like exchanging money.no questions..Keep ATM thats the easiest..cirrus and visa...

In private shops its easy just like exchanging money
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

The few shops that are willing to change USD will give you a lousy rate. LKR 100 to USD 1, when the official rate is LKR 111-112.

It is true that some money changers will give you a few cents more per USD than banks when changing large notes. If you change at a money changer make sure he is authorised and always get a receipt. You will need that in case you need to re-exchange surplus LKR at the airport on departure.

Euros, Pounds etc. are just as popular as US Dollars and just as easy to change.

I have never been asked any questions in banks (stupid or not) other than how much I want to change. Changing travellers cheques can take a while because they have to check the genuinity of the checks. You will need to bring your passport when changing in banks.

Could be that banks are asking Sri Lankans stupid questions, as Sri Lankans are not legally allowed to possess foreign currency.

Both are equally accepted. Authorized money changers will give you about Rs.1-2 more which is quite marginal. Easier to just do it when you arrive at the airport or pop into a bank when your traveling.

Shops will give you a rate lower by around Rs.4-5. So will the hotels you stay in.
