Travel tips for August

by Mahoud Online Now Jul 27, 2004 at 1:53 PM

Hello dear VT Members At the end of August i go to Sri Lanka together with a friend and we stay for three weeks. I always make my journeys on my own hand. We like to travel around and to spend a relaxing time at the beach. And if its possible we try to avoid the public places with much other tourists. So if you can give me a good tip where to stay i would be very thankful. But more i be interesting about Malaria prophylaxis! Is it necessary to make a prophylaxis with Lariam or Resorchin in Sri Lanka? What have you done against the danger of malaria? For every reply i would be very thankful. With many greetings Mahoud

Hello, Malaria is there in Sri Lanka but only in the jungle areas. To be on the safe side if you plan on back packing you might want to take some shots before you come. There are quite a few nice places in Sri Lanka which have not yet been commercialised. It would all depend on your interests and budget. Cheers, Nilanka

we were advised Chloriquin for Sri Lanka [ definatly not Lariam, it has awful side effects ] but the best protection against Malaria is to not get bitten ! taking large doses of vitamin B6 helps to deter mosquitos

our doctors must read those books Oscar, because we were advised to take anti-malarials, though we didnt bother as we had heard that it wasnt a problem. Actually l dont think we were bitten by a mosquito while we were there, although your ants just loved the taste of my husband !
