Portugal & Southern Spain in December

by Lurchizo Online Now Jul 24, 2012 at 7:01 PM

I always like to get away at Christmas. This year I am thinking of flying into Lisbon, spend a few days there, head down to the south coast, over to Seville and as far as Gibraltar. Does anyone have any thoughts about whether this is a good time to be there in relation to things being closed over the holidays? I am looking at landing around Dec 20th and leave around Jan 1st. Temps look in the low to mid teens which I can take.

No, just maybe 24 th December (afternoon), 25 (all day); the same for 31st Dec-1 Jan. Just check the time of visit (for museums or so). Reagrding the weather, I think it's a good time for Andalucía. I suppose everything the same about Portugal. For example, for Sevilla, have a look at the average tempertures: www.weatherbase.com/weather/weatherall.php3?s=19380&refer=&cityname=Seville-Andalucía-Spain&units=

Really you want to be as far south as possible. I've not been to Gibraltar but just over the water in Morocco is excellent at that time of year, even north of the Atlas. You can expect to see rain. If it doesn't rain at that time of year then the locals are in trouble. talking to an ex-pat in the Algarve we were told that even as late as March it can be fairly wet (but we just got warm sunshine in Feb). As for Christmas itself, I'd make sure you are booked in somewhere over the main couple of days otherwise accommodation and food will be hard to get. I'd guess you're unlikely to find cheap last minute offers at that time of year - but there are a lots of us who'd be interested to hear if you do ;-)
