Bus transport questions

by giuseppef Online Now Jul 9, 2012 at 1:32 PM

Hello, I bought tickets to Madrid instead to Malaga because it is much much cheaper and now I will go to Malaga from Madrid and return by bus. It is 6 hours, but not a problem, good chance to see Spanish landscapes too. My first question would be: should I buy bus tickets in advance at movelia.es ? If yes, is it enough to only print reservation when I buy ticket online or I should do something more when I arrive to bus station? I read printing is not enough for trains, not sure about buses. And what about other destinations, for example Malaga-Sevilla, to buy in advance or it will be possible to find seats when I arrive to bus station? How to reach Madrid Estacion Sur (from where I see buses go to Malaga) from airport? I read taxi from airport to Madrid center costs like bus from Madrid to Malaga and I would like to avoid taxis. Since I should arrive in Madrid at 22, is it possible go out from airport and arrive to Madrid Estacion Sur within 2 hours? Thanks

many questions the bus is not needed to buy ticket ahead of time you buy from bus driver. and indeed will let you see more and closer. Movelia.es is a good site i recommend, but still not inclusive of all bus companies its an ongoing project. Estacion del sur is reachable from the airport by EMT bus 203 in Terminal 2 that takes you to Atocha and from there a short walk to bus terminal or take the Airport express bus for 5€ direct Barajas to Atocha; esmadrid.com/en/barajas-airp... taxi is about 35€ Hope it helps

Hi gwened, it helps a lot, thanks! I thought taxi is about 25 EUR, now I see it is even 10 EUR more than bus from Madrid to Malaga, will avoid it definitely. I hope I will be able to take Airport express before 11.30 pm because I see on their page they don't stop at Atocha after 11.30 pm. By the way, could you give me other link(s) where I could see more bus timetables if movelia.es is not complete?

Just a quick line: Aeropuert Express = 203, thatgoes from Atocha (just Cibeles during the night) to T1-T2-T4. I'd recommend to take the metro from the airport (line 8) to Nuevos Ministerios, then, L6 to Méndez Alvaro/Estación Sur, otherwise, Atocha-Estación de Autobuses on forrt could be a long walk (let alone draggin your luggage). - Bus: www.emtmadrid.es: - Metro: www.metromadrid.es (with version in English too)

The airport express bus from Terminals 1, 2 and 4 leave about every 20 minutes but after 11.30 they go every 35 minutes through the night. Better to look at the actual bus web site here : emtmadrid.es/lineaaeropuerto... You can see it takes about 40 minutes from airport to Atocha. Atocha bus terminal is some way from Estacion Sur at Mendez Alvaro. Maybe at least 30 minutes fast walk. By the way the bus terminal web site is on this URL: estacionautobusesmadrid.com/... But a short taxi ride and maybe costs under €7 - I have no idea about costs and if taxis are easy to find at the place where the airport bus arrives but as this is one of the busiest transport hubs in Madrid then I think you have no problem. If you arrive into Terminal 4 then I would advise trying to take the local train service called CERCANIAS all the way to Mendez Alvaro bus station however the last train leaves at 22.28 I think and arrives at Mendez Alvaro 30 minutes later. This is the easiest direct method normally since they started this service. For details about train times go to this page : renfe.com/viajeros/cercanias... Also in addition if you decide to take the airport bus to Atocha and are confident about taking the local train CERCANIAS then also look at times from Atocha to Mendez Alvaro because other local trains will run and this route is very quick like 3 minutes so worth your while looking.

You talk about other buses and also mention Seville. You may consider taking the bus from Madrid to Seville first because they have ones running all night? Have a look : http://www.socibus.es Or the bus from Madrid down to Granada (which is almost on the way to Malaga) is good and frequent - see www.alsa.es That latter web is good for finding other buses as well. The Madrid to Malaga service is run by Daibus : http://www.daibus.es and they use MOVELIA for ticket booking. You can just print your ticket and show to driver or if you have time take it to the ticket window for double checking. Taking the cheaper and slower train between Seville and Malaga is fine. Look up times on www.renfe.com By the way. About trains. If you book your tickets using www.renfe.com which is the Spanish Railways web site you can print off your reservation and this will be fine for long distance trains as far as I am aware. The shorter distance trains may need an actual ticket to feed through the machines at barriers. If you have your reference number then you can print off tickets at machines at station. Sometimes queues can be boring in railway stations ! Anyway there are some more notes about buying RENFE on line here : seat61.com/Spain-trains.htm#...

Thanks a lot guys! alfred_the_great, I will arrive at 22 at Terminal 2. Unfortunately, it means I will miss Cercanias probably. But, if I use Cercanias, where should I buy tickets for these trains? Reading your other post, other idea occured to me. I visited websites you sent me and saw at www.alsa.es that there is direct night bus from Aeropuerto Terminal 4 to Granada which would be great. What do you think about taking that bus and avoid traveling to center of Madrid? Later, it should be easy to reach Malaga from Granada with bus (no direct trains Granada-Malaga I see at renfe.com). Is it easy to reach Terminal 4 from Terminal 2? Will I have problems to find from where bus go? And for this particular bus, I guess it should be safer to buy ticket online and print it.

I think the idea of taking the Supra bus from the airport to Granada would be excellent. These buses are very comfortable. Leather seats ! So you will have a good rest. If you are planning to go to Granada during your tour then this is excellent idea. Forget the transfer to South bus station. Once you are at Madrid airport you will have time to look outside terminal 4 to see the bus stands and check out the journey. If you are definite about this journey I would buy a seat on www.alsa.es - you can use Pay Pal - so you are sure. The bus will also continue to South bus station before reaching Granada. So more people will get on at South station . And if you book this bus then be sure yo book your ALHAMBRA ticket on line so that all is organised. The bus from Granada to Malaga is hours about €10 so this is no problem. Also ALSA. Or you can go to other destinations - the world is your oyster.

Then, I will use bus from airport to Granada! Good you reminded me to book Alhambra now :) Now I have only one doubt left regarding bus: when I choose Aeropuerto Madrid-barajas T4 - Granada 29/07/2012 they say on website: Aeropuerto Madrid-barajas T4 Granada 01:30 (30/07/2012) but, when I choose Aeropuerto Madrid-barajas T4 - Granada 28/07/2012 there is nothing in brackets, only: Aeropuerto Madrid-barajas T4 Granada 01:30 Little bit confusing, if I would like to travel on Sunday 29, it means I should buy ticket for Saturday 28, right?

From Terminal 2 to T4: Madrid-Barajas Airport has a free bus service for passengers without a boarding pass, connecting terminals T1, T2, T3 and T4, 24 hours a day. www.aena-aeropuertos.es/csee/Satellite/Aeropuerto-Madrid-Barajas/en/Page/1237554331229//Connections-between-terminals.html

It means, I think, that that info refers to the following day; no services for 29/07 No services exist for the chosen date. Data for the next day is offered.

Thanks a lot Redang! Well, if that is the case (no bus on Sunday), then I would have to return to initial plan and go to bus station in Madrid. Shame because I really liked this plan. I am checking if there are other buses from Madrid airport to Andalucia, but it looks no...

Pity - the only day of the week that this 01.30 bus to Granada does not run is Sunday morning. But you could go to Seville on the SOCIBUS which leaves at midnight on Saturday or 01.00 on Sunday morning !! Maybe another option. http://www.socibus.es Too many options !

Yeah, pity :( Dear friends, what about this bus? Madrid - Granada 29/07/2012 Madrid-avda De America Granada 01:00 06:30 I understand Avenida de America is metro station, but it looks like there is Sunday early morning bus from there to Granada (strange why Alsa don't have night bus from airport on Sunday when there are night buses from city center). Anyway, checked http://www.metromadrid.es/ which Redang sent me, but when I choose airport terminals and Avenida de America - "No se encontraron rutas con los parámetros de busqueda introducidos." Because I imagine Estacion Sur is huge, I guess it would be easier for me to take the bus at Avenida de America if possible. But, is it easy and faster to reach Avenida de America from airport than go to Estacion Sur?? Unfortunately, my flight arrives at 22 and I don't have many options as we saw above.

Maybe it has something to do with the time due to it begins at 6am. If you use this link for recommended route, it works: www.metromadrid.es/en/viaja_en_metro/trayecto_recomendado/index.html (in English). However, if you decide to go to Avenida de América, then I suggest you the bus number 200. It’s even faster and cheaper; single ticket, 1,50 € (and it usually takes around 20 minutes), let alone at that time (22hours = 10 pm). Unfortunately, the site doesn’t have the info in English, but I hope you’ll understand anyway, if not, feel free to ask. For bus 200: www.emtmadrid.es/Servicios/lineas.aspx?mapaFiltro=20011&tituloLinea=200%20-%20AVENIDA%20AMERICA-AEROPUERTO&mapaX=442529&mapaY=4476790 Last bus is at 11,30 pm from T4, and it goes to T2, T1 and city, so, you should have plenty of time: www.emtmadrid.es/web_emt_babel/files/5c/5c4028f9-8ec1-42eb-8125-6681e0d45101.pdf If not, the metro: Line 8 to Mar de Cristal, then, line 4 to Avenida de América (or line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios, then line 6 to Avenida de América or line 8 to Colombia, then, line 9 to Avenida de América). I suggest you the first option but you can calculate the fastest route or the one with the least number of changes with the options the site gives.

You finally cracked it ! That bus leaving from the Avenida de América Intercambiador (or transport hub interchange) at 01.00 then goes to the Estacion Sur and on the ALSA timetable is the one that leaves at 01.30 and arrives at 06.30. The price is same whether you board at Avenida de América or Sur. Just decide on which place is most convenient to travel to from the airport.

Thanks a lot guys, I am really grateful to you for your help! I decided to use bus line 200 to Avenida de America and then will wait for my bus to Granada. My flight will arrive at 22, there will be enough time to leave airport and take this bus 200 at 23:30 and then bus to Granada at 01.00. Looks perfect! Only one more question, sorry :) Where would you suggest me to leave this bus line 200, which station is close to this bus station where I will take bus to Granada? I see this: AEROPUERTO T4 (3649) AEROPUERTO T3 (4707) AEROPUERTO T2 (3542) AEROPUERTO T1 (3540) CANILLEJAS (1293) AV.AMERICA-ARTURO SORIA (1285) AV.AMERICA-CARTAGENA (1282) AV.AMERICA-FCO.SILVELA (1280) PRINCIPE DE VERGARA-MARIA DE MOLINA (2235) So, should I exit bus at Arturo Soria, Cartagena or Fco. Silvela? Or maybe even Principe de Vergara-Maria de Molina?

AV.AMERICA-FCO.SILVELA (1280) Normally, the stop is inside but as far as I know, there are works so, it stops outside. If you speak a little of Spanish, you can ask the driver but the Bus station-intercambiador is a yellow building on your side. What I don't know now, is about the bus to Granada (and the otheres) although I suppose they run from the terminal (inside the building). Do you know the bus company?
