I did elephant riding in the north of Thailand because my mate wanted to, and I didn't liked it at all. Animals are treated badly and it's quite expensive. I'm never gonna give support to this kind of things again.

There are actually places where the elefants are being treated fair - it's true, on a lot they aren't. I was elefant trekking in Khao Sok National park. An almost 2 hour ride through rubber trees and then forest to a waterfall and back. Around Khao Lak there are also 2 companies that offer elefant rides. Maybe I will visit one of them when I am in Thailand the next 2 weeks. There are elefant rides on Phuket, but I didn't go when I was there. Generally it is to be said that the elefants should be able to walk in the shade - so choose a place where there is forest. Then they should also not work in the afternoon, because it gets too hot. The reliable companies only offer rides in the morning because of that. The mahud (trainer) of the elefant should be able to handle his elefant without violence. If you see elefants that are mistreated or with scars - choose another company!
