South Coast - Where to stay

by joecooper Online Now Sep 13, 2006 at 1:59 AM

Hello, we are looking for somewhere to stay on the south coast of Sri Lanka for about a week at the end of the month. Can you suggest one or two places? We are looking for somewhere with some amenities (guest houses, restaurant, perhaps a bar or surf shop). The main thing we are looking for is somewhere with good transport to other places along the coast - major towns like Galle but also 'desert island' type spots. We hope to cover the area between Galle and Kirinda but are open to suggestions. Thanks for your help!

Starting on the south west coast and working round, Wunderbar just outside Bentota is great place to stay but a little pricey if you are on a budget:

"Piya Nivasa" in Akurala between Ambalangoda
and Hikkaduwa comes highly recommended, its on the beach and the rates are excellent.

I would not bother with Galle except to stock up in the shops and to change trains. Having said this it would be criminal to come to Galle without a stroll around the walls of the magnificent Galle Fort.

Along the coast east of Galle comes Unawatuna (for the surf scene), Mirissa (for snorkelling and some surf), Matara (watch out for crocs in the river and estury)and Tangalle (for scuba diving). All of these were resorts with lots of accommodation in every price range.

I have not stayed overnight in any of these places since the Tsunami but others have so its worth looking in the most recent VT accommodation tips.

This entire coast was hit hard by the Tsunami so things will have changed and an up to date Lonely Planet could come in handy here.

You will also get a lot of people asking for your help to put their lives back together post-tsunami, which is quite understandable. However, the people who need your help most are maybe the least likely to ask you for it directly.

I would not stay at Tissa the touts here really are hard work. Try Kataragama instead, its mad.
