My wife and I have booked train tickets online from Gatwick to Southampton via Clapham Junction at 3pm 3rd July. After saying they could reserve seats for us, once booked they said we couldn't. Does anyone know how busy that train is likely to be , esp the Clapham - Southampton leg? As we would have just got off a long haul flight we're hoping we wont have to stand!
Being a Sunday it shouldn't be particularly busy. Also because the seats are non-reservable your tickets will be flexible and so if you arrive early (or late) you can take any train.

Sundays are not that busy compared with the rest of the week unless there is a big sporting event for example (there isn't) and they are long trains usually 8 or even 12 cars. You cannot reserve actual seats on trains on most of the railways in the south of England commuter belt. An cheap Advance Ticket (where available) may be be valid for a particular train but not a particular seat on it. Seats are not numbered on the trains used in the commuter network. So you probably have an open ticket you can use on any train on any reasonable route should you so wish. There are two trains every hour to Southampton on Sundays, so no need to panic if your flight is delayed.
