Hi We'll be visiting the area this summer. After some research, we've decided that a walk through/along the Fjaðrárgljúfur, is not to be missed. Direction to the canyon says: "Take road no. 1 from Selfoss direction Höfn. Just before arriving at Kirkjubæjarklaustur take exit to road no. F206 to Lakagígjar. After few minutes drive the road to Laki leads to the right. Do not take the right turn to Laki instead you should continue the drive for few more minutes until you arrive at Fjaðrárgljúfur". My question: Can we drive this short section of F206 with a normal 2WD? No other part of our planned trip requires a 4WD. Thanks!
The road to Fjaðrárgljúfur starts as 206, and becomes F206 later in the direction of Laki. You can drive it.

You should be fine for a short stretch of F-road. We've been to Iceland in april. Like you, we didn't plan on using any F-roads. So we just went for a normal 2WD rental car. When driving there we came about some roads that should have been 'easily accessible' by normal car. However, we had our doubts about that. So after 3 days in a Corolla, we went back to the rental agency to trade it in for a Grand Vitara. We felt so much more at ease afterwards. It's not that we would have really gotten in trouble with the 2WD, but we felt somewhat "limited" in it. I have to say that we often drive an extra stretch to go on a road we haven't been on before. When driving in the 4WD we were on some gravelroads which you can normally drive on in a 2WD, bur we wouldn't have taken the risk ...
