Hey guys, My partner and I are looking at heading to south america from australia in mid november, at this stage we are a little over whelmed by how big the place is and have narrowed down the places we want to go to brazil, argentina and maybe machu pichu. would anyone be able to suggest places in each of the countries to visit and how long. we realise we wont be able to see everything in one trip and we will just be scratching the surface. we are looking at going for 3-4 weeks. hope you can help :)
3 or 4 weeks is not long, perhaps just stick to Brazil and Macchu Pichu. A few days in Rio exploring the sites and beaches would be enough, football match in Maracana stadium if you interested. Ouro Preta, north of Rio is a world heritage site, the coast near Salvador (Bahia) is worth a week, from Manaus on the Amazon take a trip upriver and of course there is the Iguazu Falls that straddles the border between Brazil and Argentina. In Argentina there are the mountains and lake district as well as a side trip to Tierra Del Fuego. The more i think about it the more i think you are trying to do too much in the time available to you. Maybe just see Brazil and Argentina, leave Macchu Pichu for another time as you can also see La Paz , Lake Titicaca, Nasca and other areas on another trip. i suggest you look at the advice from this post, study the map and get a rough idea of which attraction you like to visit then work out how long it will take you. happy travels!

Hi I agree with davidjo - as you have already realised, the distances involved are vast and it would be a crying shame to squander time and money on rushing between farflung places rather than taking the time to properly appreciate a few areas. I would therefore sugest that you pick one country and focus on that. For example, we found that 4 weeks was nowhere near long enough to explore Peru, and I can't wait to get back to see and do more there. In order to do Macchu Picchu justice, you need to see it in the context of the Sacred Valley, which will probably take you the best part of a week (including travel to and from Cusco). MP is great, but we found that we were more impressed by other Inca sites (Ollantaytambo and Moray spring to mind), and it would be a pity to go to all that trouble and expense just see one location. It would help if you could perhaps indicate what your interests are so that we could use that to narrow things down? An indication of your budget (backpacker, luxury?) would also be helpful. Regards Cathy

Argentina and Brasil are two of the biggest countries on earth and the distances are vast indeed. Coming in from Oz, fly into Santiago, cross the mountains and visit parts of Argentina on the way to BA and enjoy BA... make your way up to Igauzu Falls (fly there) and then cross over to Foz da Iguassu and make your way over to Sao Paolo and Rio, visiting Santos and Paraty on the way.. That would take care of 4 weeks.. Be aware of the visa regulations for Oz passport holders to Chile, Argentina and Brasil. Argentina has the best food and the best wine! Chile the best mountains and Brasil, Ha.. very nice people ..
