      Taxi fare

      Johannesburg Apr 30, 2013 at 1:06 AM

How much would it cost to go from the airport to House on York(7 York Street, Kensington, South Bedfordview, 2047 Johannesburg)? My hotel suggests that it is best for them to arrange a pick up which would cost anywhere between 560 to 600 rands for the four of us. Is this correct? In the past we have found that taking a taxi from the airport is cheaper than arranging through the hotel. Please let me know.

    • road trip from cape town to spain/london and back

South Africa May 10, 2013 at 12:52 AM

      Hi guys

We are a group of friends planning a road trip from cape town through africa to the UK with a kombi.

The reason why we are using a Kombi is so that we will have enough space and we want to fit a Toyota motor in the bus.-which Toyota motor would you guys suggest and is there enough spares available in African countries?

We don't have much time so we want to cover as much road as possible in a short amount of time.
We have done a southern africa trip with a fiat strada and covered 10000km,s in 18 days and want to go big this time.

Our concern is that do we need medical certificates, visas for some countries, which road would be the best to take and the safest so that we wont get stuck in mud and can we get pre-treatment for diseases such as Malaria?

Any advice or ideas would be much appreciated.

      Cape Town - Garden Route

South Africa Apr 22, 2013 at 7:30 AM

Hi, my husband and I are coming again to SA for the 4th time in November. We are staying in Cape Town for 4 days and wondered if anyone out there can give us anymore ideas on what to do, where to go. We've done the usual Table Mountain, Robben Island etc, I've read about the Africa Dance Theatre in Cape Town - is this worth a visit - got some good reviews on Trip Advisor? Also what about the 2 Oceans Aquarium on the V&A Waterfront? Any new ideas would be grateful. We're travelling the Garden Route and will be staying at various places en route. One of the places is Plet Bay - staying at the Redbourne Country Lodge. This will be the first time we've stayed here, we'll be here for 3 days - what is there to do around this area?...see or do? Then on from there we're at Beluga House, Wilderness - again any good ideas - see/do/interesting places etc etc.
      Your help is always grateful!

      Johannesburg Mar 31, 2013 at 7:33 AM

      Hi folks!
I need some information about this area. We are planning a tour starting from Johannesburg, ending in Cape Town 2 weeks in October. We want to visit Okavango, Moremi, Victoria Falls, Kruger Park and we need an advice about a good and reliable agency which can arrange us a package tour. Since we are 8 we cannot take the risk to arrange all the hotels and the tours by ourselves so we need a local assistance.
Is there anyone to help us about recommending a good company? Or do you have any other recommendations?

If so where should we add? Besides this should we cover Durban too? If covering Durban then we could take a flight to Durban after KNP and then take another flight from there to PE and then drive to Cape Town from there through the garden route. Is April best for anything?

South Africa Feb 10, 2013 at 3:34 PM

Hi, a colleague of mine is from South Africa. He told me that the best time to visit South Africa is March or April because it's not that hot and less crowded. That's why I've been waiting. I've just googled and found this consensus: the best time to visit the wildlife park (Kruger) is from May - October (i.e. winter/dry season) because you'll have a better chance to see the wildlife; and the best time to enjoy the beach and Garden Route will be from November to March. April will suit my schedule best and I thought it was the best season for most things. But it turns out it is best time for nothing? National Park, Garden Route and the beach are high on my list of things to do.

Opinions on pr/post SA safari plan

The two "givens" are that we need to be at the J'Burg airport on the morning of Oct 27 and then on Nov 8 we will be done with the the photo safari portion of our trip. Coming from the states I am thinking a couple of days before in say Amsterdam and at the end a couple of days in Capetown before we head back to Los Angeles. I have some flexibility before and after and would like some ideas of that we could incorporate on either side of our safari time. We will be in the Kruger Natl Park for 4 days, then up to the Victoria Falls, then to Botswana, then to Chobe Natl Park, then to Okavango Delta. So I am looking for recommendations before and after. Driving from Cape Town to Namibia and Botswana

South Africa Feb 2, 2013 at 7:01 PM

I read that it takes approx 7 hours to drive to Springbok. If I am feeling ambitious, ho much longer could it take to get to the fish river Canyon area in Namibia? A 1 day long car ride, or is that stretching it? Is there a better place to stop than Springbok, or is there suggested places to see on the way? On my way back down to Cape Town I was thinking of stopping for a few nights in the transfrontier park on the Botswana side. This would be in March. Is that a park where seeing Game is guaranteed, or is there better parks to stop at on my way back to Cape Town? Thanks :)

      Airport to Hostel Transfer question

Cape Town Jan 29, 2013 at 7:01 PM

Hello, I'm doing an overland trip starting in Cape Town and ending in Nairobi with Oasis Overland in 2 months time, and they are now asking me if I require airport transfer and first night's accommodation. The cost for the transfer is 18 pounds, the cost of the night in a 4-bed dorm at their recommended hostel (The BackPack) is 19 pounds. I'm seeing on google maps that the hostel is 20km away from the airport, and that booking the hostel myself is the same as their rate. My question is, is their airport transfer good value? I would have thought it would be a bit lower to go just 20kms... But then again I've never been to Cape Town. Can you please let me know what you think? Thank you very much in advance, Leon
