I posted this on a thread started by Lambada, (VT Forum temporarily unavailable but since it had got so long it Lambada thought it would be better if I started a new one. So, I am moving it here. Ok, this thread is helping me alot. I hope you don't mind if I jump in with questions. This is part 1 of my route. The towns are waypoints only. 1. Malelane 2. Barbeton 3. Piet Retief 4. Dundee 5. Sani lodge Part 2 will continuing on slowly to Cape Town. I like to plan no more than 4 hours of driving a day. I do no more than 2 straight days of driving before I like to find a comfortable, interesting area to spend 2 to 3 nights. I have no real destination for the end of the trip though we are going in the direction of Cape Town. We are coming the see the people and the country not the tourist spots. So, I have to questions. 1. Any suggestions of overnights on this route at 4 hours apart. 2. Is St. Lucia a must and way? If you think I should I will start another thread for this. Everything read okay till the name Dundee. Must confess I have never been through there...since it is not on a major route. As you said, these are waypoints only, so you are not planning to visit someone there . . . . or is it a misprint?

Can you tell us more about yourself? 20 or 60 years old? Backpacker or luxury car hire?

60 year old retiree, normal car, prefer moderate priced/local places to stay. Can spend more and stay in backpacker lodges. The way points are just checkpoints, but the fact that you mentioned that you have not been to Dundee and are a local etensive traveler makes it the type of place I might want to visit. Not a negative to you, just a place the people don't normally go and therefore someplace I might like to explore off the beaten track. We have traveled extensively throughout the world, so other than seeing the big 5, we are more interested in "meeting" South Africa and do not need to see everything. We have no set itenary nor do we want one. We will go to Kruger first and then head south. We arrive around Aug 29th and leave around Oct 10 to participate in the Cross Eygpt Challenge. http://crossegypt2012.blogspot.com/

Dundee really isn't that great a place unless as mentioned above you are visiting someone...? When are you coming to SA and for how long? Where are you from? St. Lucia is a great place, it is a world heritage site and really beautiful. It is a wetland park with a wide variety of wildlife to see, as well as being close to some great beaches... St. Lucia is +-260km from Piet Retief so it would be possible to travel the distance in 4 hours...

"Can spend more and stay in backpacker lodges." That's a bit confusing since the backpacker lodges are at the lower end of the spend? Would you be be comfortable in smaller, more personal B&B's and self-catering? While many towns don't have decent hotels anymore, there is always a clean bed, good food (and a local to chat to) if you go for the smaller, informal B&Bs and guest houses. A website like safarinow is fairly reliable and it also gives indicators to next nearest places. Dundee is well-placed for touring some Boer & Zulu battlefields and seems to have lots of tourist accom. Maybe I'll make a detour there one day.....
