Reliability of low cost airlines

by lambada Online Now Jun 29, 2012 at 10:55 AM

How reliable are the low cost carriers (Kulula / Mango / 1time) in South Africa? Is it too risky to book a flight from Cape Town to Jo'burg that lands in Jo'burg 4hrs before the departure of my Europe-bound flight?

Kulula codeshares with British Airways Mango codeshares with SA Airways 1time is independent At the moment, nothing negative is being said of any of them. Kulula has the longest track record and their association with BA is quite obvious (I have often booked Kulula and found myself on BA instead, within 15 to 30 minutes of the originally scheduled time). Mango is a relatively recent entry from SA Airways. Have used all of them.

Correction: they don't officially "codeshare" but work very closely together.

I have traveled on all three Gerald mentioned and all were on time and a nice safe ride.

The only times I were late on any of them was when there was a general problem, such as bad weather, affecting all airlines at a particular airport.

I use all three airlines on a regular basis and have had no serious delays. Think you can safely book with the one with the best price.

Landing 4 hours before your international flight should be fine, these low cost airlines can be late on occasion but not by 4 hours! Flying to JHB make sure you don't fly to Lanseria airport as this is on the other side of JHB and a long way away from OR Tambo... Like most other low cost airlines, don't expect any refreshments, but that is hardly an issue on a 2 hour flight...
