Backpacking Turkey to Cape Town

I am planning to backpack from Turkey to Cape Town travelling the length of East Africa. The trip will take about 6 months, and I wonder how I should handle my travel money. Should I take USD travellers cheques, cash or some other method ? I doubt if there are many ATM machines ? TJ
