what is the best place (better rate) for exchanging money in Sofia? is the difference at the airport a rip off so to do only a few euros and then the rest in the city center?
There is a bank at the airport as well as ATMs so it is definitelly safe to exchange there, if you have only cash and the bank is not working you can exchange only some money at the CHANGE. The rate is fixed - 1 EUR = 1.95 BGN, be careful and although the rate is written ask : "How much you'll get me for 10 EUR?". It's always better exchange at bank :) sofia-life.com/info/money.ph...

yes, we will use cash. will the bank at the airport be open at 19.00? although there is a fix rate it seems the Change bureaus in the touristic areas (where we will probably be) try to cheat with commisions etc

Many of them definitely try to cheat especially at the aerport. I doubt the bank will be open, try to exchange only few EUR just to go in the city and then look around the hotel or in the hotel. Maybe we can help with some EXCHANGE in the area you're going if you share it?

When we went to Bulgaria we took money out of an ATM machine at Sofia Airport. We were later ripped off changing money at an exchange on the street. They advertise an attractive looking rate in huge writing, but it is not the rate they give you and they will not return money. I would not ever use an exchange there again. Use a bank.

the morning after we will start from Serdica station, I guess there are banks and exchanges around there. Although my question is more about what to do at the airport the first evening because we need to change some euros to leva anyway, does the difference worth it to wait for the morning after?

if I change money here in Greece they give me 180 leva for 100 euro.

Then why don't you exchange in Greece 10-20 EUR - you'll loose only 1-2 EUR from the normal rate in Bulgaria but you'll know that you can reach the center. I'd also use ATM as they're most sure. Is you happen to exchange money ask how much you'll recieve nomatter of what is written at the board.

that's a good alternative, you are right, I wish I just knew how much I get for 100 euros in a bank there then I could make the comparison. Because if I use an ATM i know I have to pay 4euros+ x0,30% x2% every time which is about 8-9 euros per 100 euros

I see, Well the bank rate and a normal exhange office rate is 1.95 BGN for 1 EUR. But I don't know the exchange offices at the airport might charge you 1.50 or even less, so it's better not to rely on them. Take some moeny with you and then exchange at a normal place :)
