While walking up the Watkins Path I noticed a type of road going up the side of the mountain, this is very steep in places and unsuitable for a vehicle. Anyone know what it is?

It's likely a cart track that was used to take slate down from the quarries. As far as I know, they were like big boxes on tracks with ropes and pullies to get them up the hill. Pop into the slate museum in Llanberis (free!) if you want to know more about them.
