hiking in slovenia

by MIZZOU228 Online Now Jan 23, 2012 at 9:11 PM

I will be traveling from Vienna to Ljubljana. Everyone talks about how beautiful Slovenia is. Is there any good hiking/lakes/waterfalls/mountains close to Ljubljana and accessible by train? Thanks.

Slovenia is really small and full of mountains and you will have no problems at all finding some hiking trails. The slovenians are very keen outdoor people too and you should have no problem getting some dvice from them. You could take a day of hiking around lakes like Bled and Bohinj for instance. They are not that far from Ljubljana. But there are many other options and i better wait until some of the slovenians see this posting cause they are probaply better at helping you than me.

As Claus says, loads of good walking in Slovenia and plenty easily accessible from Ljub. Bled is only an hour by regular bus, for example, and there are buses to Bohinj too. Also are lovely walks around the area of the Skocjan Caves (train to Divaca station). Bus info in English: http://www.ap-ljubljana.si/eng/ Train info in English: slo-zeleznice.si/en/passenge... And there's loads of info about hiking and walking on the excellent official Slovenian tourist info website: slovenia.info/en/Hiking.htm?...

If you travel by train from Vienna, why don't you stop in Maribor for couple of days: it's good hiking on Pohorje hills (if you want to walk entire hiking path through Pohorje it takes app. 3 days, but you can of course do smaller sections). Nature is lovely there, but it's different type of hiking/landscape than in Alps. Recommend to stop by Black lake, waterfalls aren't plentiful there, but forest is very nice. You can as well pick bluberries when it's season. I mention this hills because it's very easy to reach Maribor from train route and you can take a city bus till the foot of it. Other locations take more or less driving from Ljubljana. Other posters are quite right - the distances are small within Slovenia. Closest to Ljubljana I'd recommend for hiking (Alpine) would be beyond Kamnik (end of train line, connections are frequent during day), from there you have to get to Kamniska bistrica by local bus (and see waterfall), climb up Velika Planina (or take cable car up). See here if you are interested: http://www.velikaplanina.si/ (on the site there's also schedule for Kamnik to K. bistrica bus). If you have chance, get to Logarska dolina and follow some climbing paths there, it's beautiful landscape and less visited than Triglav national park paths (which is indeed beautiful). A waterfall is there too, but in summer it can be pretty dry. http://www.logarska-dolina.si/ if you want to see photos and more info. The most popular waterfall in Slovenia is Savica, couple of kilometers from Lake Bohinj, it can be very crowded by waterfall in summer or weekends, and you can see it only from safe distance. The area (including Bohinj lake) belongs to NP, if you go from Ljubljana I'd say stay couple of days here at least, but there are good connections from capital also. Hike around lake is very nice thing, especially if you will swim there in summer; it can take between 3 hrs at fastest through whole day if you stop a lot. http://www.bohinj.si/ There are plenty of paths, some taking to highest mount. When in the area already, go to see very nice off beaten path location, Korita Mostnice, it's small but wild river and there're not so many crowds. Go to Stara Fuzina first, from there only follow the signs for it and you cannot miss it. Like you may note upon a visit, hiking is very popular thing among Slovenians, which resulted in many hiking (guide) books, maps and also some good free brochures you can fetch from tourist information centres.

It's no worth to write if we don't know when you intend to come. Anyway I'm not recomending winter or early spring hiking if you are not experienced mountanier and of course well equiped. There is one basic rule for slovenian alps: never go alone and allways write at the huts in the coontrol books where you'll go!!! So... when will you came? One tour you have on my page (planina Blato-koča pri Triglavskih jezerih or Mud Mountain to Triglav lakes Hut) I'll give you tours and links when you replay...
