TRAVEL FROM SLIGO TO?

by Yve1 Online Now Jul 9, 2010 at 7:54 PM

After spending a week horsebackriding in the Sligo area, we have 5 days to travel to other areas of Ireland. Are there specific modes of travel from Sligo that make it easy to see other areas. We will be arriving from Dublin by train to Sligo, so would like to go to the Spainish Point area, but am not sure how to get there from Sligo since we will not have a car. Or, should we head to another area. We are very flexible. Are there car rentals in Sligo that allow us to drop off the car in Dublin where we will be flying home? ANy type of information or suggestions would be appreciated? This is our first visit abroad to Ireland.

You will be able to hire a car in Sligo but one-way hire (if available) always carries a hefty premium. Probably better to just hire the car for a day or two, seeing what you want to see, and go back to Dublin on the train from Sligo.

Google 'car hire sligo' for firms/quotes.

www.irishrail.ie for train times, details and fares. The Irish rail network is small. There's a map here:

    bueker.net/trainspotting/map...

    Click the map to enlarge.

You can, of course, travel around Ireland on buses. You can find routes and timetables on www.buseireann.ie

For local bus routes, look at this page (the main page journeyplanner does not list all routes/locations):

    buseireann.ie/inner.php?id=4...

    Bus 333 here:

    buseireann.ie/inner.php?id=5...

will take you to Spanish Point, but it is not a particularly convenient service. It might be easier to get to Miltown Malbay and take a taxi from there.

If you hire a car, on the way down from Sligo try to go via Connemara. Fascinating mountain-and-bog scenery and also the 'Gaeltacht' (Irish first language area).

With or without a car I also suggest you spend some time in the Galway area. Galway itself is lovely, and the Cliffs of Moher and Burren are unmissable.
You can take day trips from Galway by public transport, or organised tours such as

With only five days to travel around I would be inclined to stay in the same region in the west and not try to cover too much ground. Imo you need to hire a car as travelling by bus will take a lot of strategic planning in order to link up with services from each town, also you will have luggage to haul around. I suggest you hire a car in Sligo, drive to Westport (visit Westport House, Matt Molloy’s pub; www.mattmolloy.com for trad music, climb Croagh Patrick or at least visit the base area! go to the beaches around nearby Louisburgh; www.louisburgh.com), stay at least one night in the town. www.westporttourism.com
Drive on the Leenane, stopping for lunch and to take in the lovely scenery. Drive on to Clifden, staying one night (take a drive on the Sky Road before you leave). Drive through Connemara, possibly via Roundstone (you could take various routes) then on to Galway city for a night or two. Return the car in Galway and take the Citylink bus directly to Dublin airport, saving you the trouble of driving across the country on motorways on your last day.
Try www.atlaschoice.com for car-hire in Sligo

They are not too far way. With a car you'll have no problems. Without one you will be best to take a daytour from Galway, because the bus times can be a bit awkward.

    Use

    http://www.aaireland.ie/routes_beta/

to see route, info and estimated drive times for Ireland. The Cliffs are about an hour and a half from Galway by car.

Example of organised day tours here:

    galwaytourcompany.com/gtc/da...

Bus times from Galway to the Cliffs on this page:

    buseireann.ie/inner.php?id=5...

    under 'Clare', route 423.
