or I need to take a local bus to get to the center of the town and how much is the bus ticket?
The station is not in the centre of Sintra. You could walk up the hill into the town centre (perhaps 15/20 minutes? Maybe 1km), or, obviously, take a taxi, but bus 434 follows a regular (every 40 minutes?) circular route which includes the station. You can buy your ticket on the bus. Don't know how much it is, sorry...I just observed comings and goings, I did not actually take the bus.

No, you have to walk for around 20 minutes, so, if you want to save money, just walk; another story is Pena Palace, in this case, you should take the bus.

It is more-or-less all uphill, but if you take it steady there should be no problem.

It is very nice walk up from the train station to the palace, albeit slightly uphill. I would say 1 km is about right. If you then decide to walk up to the castle, it would be a good warm up...
