The station is not in the centre of Sintra.

You could walk up the hill into the town centre (perhaps 15/20 minutes? Maybe 1km), or, obviously, take a taxi, but bus 434 follows a regular (every 40 minutes?) circular route which includes the station.

You can buy your ticket on the bus. Don't know how much it is, sorry...I just observed comings and goings, I did not actually take the bus.

No, you have to walk for around 20 minutes, so, if you want to save money, just walk; another story is Pena Palace, in this case, you should take the bus.

It is more-or-less all uphill, but if you take it steady there should be no problem.

It is very nice walk up from the train station to the palace, albeit slightly uphill. I would say 1 km is about right. If you then decide to walk up to the castle, it would be a good warm up...
