I plan to travel from Singapore to Surabaya (or any other East Java detaination) end-November, preferably by ferry. I know that flying is easier and sometimes cheaper, but...pretty boring. Did anyone do this crossing (presumably via Batam)? Where can I find more information (schedules, fares etc)? Thank you for your help. Richard
Pelni has boats from Batam to Jakarta (Tanjug Priok) and Surabaya, also from Bintang (Kijang), unfortunately there website don´t work well: pelni.co.id/home.asp?loc=en&... if it is working it gives you time and price for the next weeks (at the moment not, but maybe tomorrow?) http://www.pelni.com/ this is working but gives you the schedules in a somewhat confusing way until end of 2006 (schedules did not change much, most boats run a 14 day intervall, some boats from Medan to Batam or Bintang to Jakarta run a 4 day intervall) Also from 2006 but a litte more easy to use: worldtrippin.be/pelni/index....

That's exactly what I wanted to do last year, go to Java by ferry ;) - I never made it, because I really didn't have the time during recess week... Plus: Pelni has a real bad safty record (as did the airline I ended up flying with... but that's a different story). Surabaya should be the port to go, but I couldn't find a direct ferry from Batam... Batam is where you probably have to leave from. Take a ferry from Singapore to Batam (approx. 30 min-1hr); there take another ferry to Jakarta (around 26 hrs, 250,000 to 1,000,000 Rp.). From Jakarta you have several options: take another ferry to Surabaya (26 hrs, 200 to 500 000Rp), or a night train to Jogyakarta (around 20€ if I recall correctly). There might also be a train to surabaya, but I don't know about it.
